ESSEX v. KENT. Played at Tonbridge on August 22, 23 and 24. Kent won by seven wickets. The Essex captain won the toss, but as some rain had fallen he decided to give K ent the opportunity of batting first, which by the end of the day proved to have been an error of j udgment for which no captain can be blam ed. M r. burnup did not come ott, but most of the team were in good form , more especially M r. Mason. M r. Patterson and Alec Hearne, while W righ t m ade a useful score later in the day. Kent did not score as rapidiy as usual, and took up nearly the whole of the day in m aking 281. Essex had to bat for two overs, and lost M r. Owen w ithout a run being scored. On Tuesday m orn ng the wicket was difficult, and only M r. McGahey and M r. K ortright could m ake runs. Iu the follow on Carpenter batted finely, and M r. K oitright played a good innings, but when four w ickfts had fallen Essex were still behind. Carpenter still continued to p lay a great gam e, but except M r. T urner aod M r. B ull, the other batsmen did not p lay up to their r putation, and K ent won w ithout much diffi :ulty. K e n t . F irst inn ngs. C. J .
