Cricket 1898
A ug . 25, 1898. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 365 SURREY v. LANCASHIRE. Played at the Oval on August 18, 19 and ‘20. Drawn. W hatever the Surrey team m ay have done else where, it has invariably distinguished itself at the Oval, alw ays m aking a score of over 300, except in the hecond innings of the Sussex m atch. N early alw ays, too. the team has had the good fortune to bat first. A gainst Lancashire, Surrey again won the toss, and a t the end of the first day’s play had again given an excellent account of them selves. For once Abel did not shine, but Brockwell and Holland took the edge off the bowling, aud later in the day M r. Jephson and H ayw ard took the bowling in charge, w ith the result that 361 runs were m ade for the loss of only five wickets. T he p rtnership pro duced 175 runs. W hen stum ps were draw n, H ay w ard was still in w ith 163 to his credif. On Friday, H ayw ard and Braund h it the worn-out bowling all over the field. Braund played excellent cricket, and nearly m ade his hundred, white, when the innings closed. H ayw ard was still in w ith his total a t 315—the highest score he has ever m ade. The long innings of Surrey did not come to an end before about half-past three, which was the salvation of Lancashire, for it left them in such a position th at they had a good chance of m aking a draw . They made a shockingly bad beginning, for M r. H artley, W ard, M r. M acLaren, and T yldesley were all out for very sm all scores, but Baker and M r. Eccles stopped the rot so decidedly th at no more wickets fell before the close of play. Lancashire had, therefore, all Saturday before them with sixteen w ickets in hand. They m ide no attem pt to play pretty cricket, of course, but sim ply tried to keep up their wickets. The total of the first innings did not am ount to much, but in the second. W ard played a splendid and enl irely j ustifiable barn-door gam e, and as he w as w ell backed up by Tyldesley and H allows the result was hard ly in doubt for a moment. The failure of A rthur Shrewsbury and the loss of Gunn’s wicket in the first innings when he was w ell set and in hi* very best form had much to do with the decisive defeat of the home team . On the other hand m ost of the M iddlesex men came off, some of them in a very decided m anner, and in bowling they were head and shoulders above their opponents, thanks to the splendid form shown by A lbert Trott. In batting Mr. F. G. J . Ford played a great innings, and he and M r. W arner, who in a quieter style batted superbly, quite wore out the Notts’ bowling, w hat little there was of it, during their partnership. A fter wards M r. R . N. Douglas and R aw lin m ade hay while the sun shone, and Trott played b rillian t cricket. Only two Notts’ men played up to their reputation, Gunn and M r. A. O. Jones. S. H .
