Cricket 1898

A ug . 18, 1898. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 350 poor form, until our skipper suddenly realised that Eiloart was playing, and put him on. One over was sufficient, three wickets for 6 runs was the result. There should have been 3 runs only, hut through professional jealousy Hutchinson let one ball through his legs to the boundary. We had only fifty minutes to get 138 runs. We were invited to a dance given by the North Devon Tennis Club the night- before we left, and a most enjoyable evening it was. Thus ended our Tour of 1898, with two wins and five drawn games, and a still un defeated record in North Devon. The wickets are too good to complete mitchesin two days, whea the weather is fine, as it was most of the time with us. Most of us think the tour was the most enjoyable one ever spent, and if our skipper doesn’ t quite agree, it is partly because he is a pessimist, and partly because he couldn’t get a run. The fielding certainly left much to be desired, with the exception of Cobb and Haycraft. The batting also was very uneven, with these same two exceptions, Cobb averaging exactly 70, and Haycraft 40*62, though Marsden, Leigh, Lbbs, Beaton, McMillin, and Collins did well on occasions. Marsden, Pawling, and Hutchinson bore the brunt of the bowling, but only the first named did really well, taking twenty-seven wickets for about 15 runs each. The fiolding let all the bowlers down, Pawling and Marsden being the chief sufferers in this respect. We scored 1,804 runs for the loss of sixty-six wickets, an average cf 27‘33 per wicket, whilst our opponents scored 2,119 for the loss of ninety-five wickets, an average of 22*30 per wicket. Again we are full of gratitude to all our North Devon friends. First, to Mr. and Mrs. Challen, and to Mr. and Mrs. Chanter, Captain and Mrs. Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. A. W . Lemarchand, Mr. Frank Townsend, Rev. J. White, the North Devon Tennis Club, and many others, who were all kindness itself. Mr. and Mrs. Nicholls and their daughter made the Marine Hotel a perfect place to stay at, and we never wish to be more comfortable. In conclusion, we cannot do better than quote the words of the erudite and sage Daniel Leno, and say that, like the Tower, Instow is “ a splendid place to spend a ’appy day,” and as many of them as you can g et!—L.
