Cricket 1898

A ug . 18, 1898. CBICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 357 DERBYSHIRE v. LEICESTERSHIRE. FIRST VICTORY TO LEICESTERSHIRE. Played at Derby on August 15, 16 and 17. Leicestershire won by an innings and 103 runs. On Tuesday raorniDg the unlucky Leicestershire men must have wondered what on earth the fates had in store for them. They have been so accustomed to disappointments that when the Derbyshire team, which is almost as unlucky as themselves, seemed to be delivered into their hands they may well have doubted whether the **good thing ” would come off after all. On Monday Leicestershire were batting all day for the very pretty total of 325 for nine wickets, towards which Mr. Wood and Mr. Marriott each contributed nearly a hundred by excellent cricket, and Knight over 60. The total was satisfactory as far as it went, but there was no reason to suppose that Derbyshire could not equal it. But a violent thunderstorm during the night entirely altered the appearance of the game. The Leicestershire total had now become exceedingly formidable; it was moreover increased by 21 runs before the last wieket fell. Derbyshire had a very uphill game before them, and although they began badly enough they after wards did fairly well, thanks to Mr. Ashcroft, Mr. Evershed, and Walter Sugg. They did not make their runs with feverish baste, for they had very little to hope for except a draw. When stumps were drawn they had completed an innings and were nearly 200 behind, and on Wednesday on a very difficult wieket they had no chance of distinguishing themselves in any way. Thus Leicestershire won their first match of the season. Geeson was in great form with the ball in both innings. L e ic e s t e r s h ir e . Gloucestershire won by an innings and 8 runs. Like most of the other teams which had the go id fortune to bat on Monday, Gloucestershire on Tuesday morning founl themselves in a cheerful position, for their opp ments had to bat on a wicket which had been affected by h“avy rain during the night. Moreover, after completing an innings of 26 », th°y had managed to get rid of Mr. Owen and Mr. Peirin for 33 before stumps were drawn. The Gloucestershire batting was n-jt as good all round as it has generally teen of late, Mr. Troup being the only man on the side to make a big total. Me made exactly a hundred in three hours and ten minutes. Mr. Bull met with considerable success with the ball. On Tuesday, Essex, on a difficult wicket, found the up-hill game which they had to play a little too much for them. Mr. Townsend, who is more or less a stranger to them, was in his very best form, and although in the course of the day same very good cricket was shown by Mr. Perrin, Mr. Owen, and Mr. Bull, it was found impossible to save the innings dtfeat.
