Cricket 1898

A u g . 18, 1898. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 349 first wicket in three-quarters of an hour, the former scoring much more rapidly than his partner. By this time the edge had been taken off the bowling, and Mr. Ford, after playiEg himself in for a few overs, began to make hay of it. Mr. Warner’s innings of 70 was as nearly perfect as could be, but Mr. Ford took his chances and obviously enjoyed himself. His innings of 115 was made out of a total of 184 in an hour and three- quarters ; it included 21 fours. After this the bowling was altogether beaten, and some remarkable batting was shown by Trott, while Mr. R. N. Douglas and Mr. Wells scored with ease. It was perhaps as well for Leicestershire that Middlesex was not at full strength. Against such a big total the visitors had not much chance of distingui-hing themselves, and although the match was prolonged to the third day, they were always hopelessly out of the running. But the batting of Mr. C. J. B. Wood and Coe was in both innings worthy of very high praise. In the second innings Mr. Wood and Knight began so well that they put on over 100 for the first wicket, and a big score seemed possible, but very little was afterwards done. Trott bowled exceedingly well for Middlesex in each innings. M id d l e s e x . P.F.Warner, c Gee:on, b Agar .................70 J. Douglas, lbw, b Geeson .................18 F.G.J. KENT v. SOMERSETSHIRE. Played at Taunton on August 11, 12 and 13. Drawn. A somewhat weak display by Kent in the first innings was more than atoned for by a determined stand in the second. Half-a-dozen batsmen came off with the greatest credit to themselves in one innings or the other, Mr. Patterson and Mr. Day in both. The Somerset batting was almost uniformly excellent. Two men, Mr. L. C. H. Palairet and his brother, quite broke the back of the bowling, each of them nearly scoring a hundred by perfect cricket, and afterwards Mr. Wood and Mr. V. T. Hill gave the Kent fieldsmen reason to remember their brilliant hitting for a long time. K e n t . First innings. Second inn'ngs. C. J. Burnup, c Newton, b Woods............................... 0 c R.
