THE BATTLE OF THE OVAL. i t was a summer evening, When Apted’s work was done ; And he before the scoring-box Was sitting in the sun ; And by him squatted on the green A youngster and a critic keen. “ Now tell us how the Tykes got out,” The anxious youngster cries; And then the critic keen looks up, A tear in both his eyes; “ Now tell us all about the rot, And of the licking Yorkshire got.” “ ’Twas Tom and Lockwood,” Apted cried, “ That put the Tykes to rout; But why they did, on such a pitch. I cannot well make out. But everybody said,” quoth he, “ That ’twas a famous victory.” “ Great praise our Bob and Brockwell won, And our good Captain Key,—” “ Still, ’twas a precious funny thing, The youngster said, “ Blow me ! ” • “ Nay—nay—my youthful friend,” quoth he, “ It was a famous victory. And everybody praised up Key, Who such a fight did win.” “ But why on earth did Yorks collapse ? ” — The critic then chipped in. “ Why, that I cannot tell,” said he ; “ But ’twas a famous victory.” ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. L o n g O f f . —There is no rule and no general opinion, except that it is a nuisance if done frequently. It must be left to a man’s good sense, like many other things. We may return to the subject later. GRANVILLE (Lee) “ A ” v. SIDCUP.—Played at Sidcup on August 1. G r a n v i l l e First innings. W . S. Pate, b C. C.Southey R. F. Taylor, b J, Edward W .
