Cricket 1898

326 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug 4, 1898. MIDDLESEX v. SOMERSETSHIRE. Played at Taunton on August 1, 2 and 3. Middlesex won by ten wickets. A brilliant innings of 104 by Mr. Palairet, and another of 65 by Mr. Phillips, redeemed the Somerset shire team from failure. The two batsmen made 169 between them out of a total of 221. Middle sex began badly, but afterwards Mr. 8toddart and Mr. Ford played fine cricket and towards the end of the innings Mr. Cunliffe and Mr. Wells mastered the bowling. Thanks to a good stand by J. T. Hearne, Mr. Wells was enabled to reach his hundred. On their first innings Middlesex had a lead of 133, and as the Somersetshire men did badly in their second innings, except Mr. Phillips and Mr. Hill, Middlesex had a surprisingly easy victory.
