HAMPSHIRE v. ESSEX. Played at Leyton on July 25, 26 and 27. Essex won by nine wickets. It would be a most unusual thing if Hampshire were to put its best team in the field. In the match against Essex the chief absentees were Captain Wynyard, Mr. Heseltine, and the new amateur, Mr. English. Most fortunately for the side, Mr. Hill played almost as good an innings as he had done against Surrey, and as in Major Poore he found a partner who was in as good form as himself, the Essex bowling was collared. Two wickets had fallen for 17 when the two amateurs came together} when they were parted the total was 200. Each man made his hundred, and each played a masterly game. The promise of a big score was not kept up, for Mead was far too good for the tail, Captain Quinton, who batted very well indeed, being the only man who could make anything of him. The total fell veryshort of what had been anticipated. Essex at the close of the day had made 59 for the loss of Mr. Fane, Carpenter being not out for a good 30. He only increased this total by six on the following morning, but although Mr. Perrin did nothihg, Mr. McGahey and Mr. Turner were in great form, and it seemed as if they would be able to exceed the performances of the two Hampshire amateurs on the previous day. After they were parted Russell began a remarkable innings. His first hits were two 5’s and three 4’s, and until the end of the innings he continued to play a vigorous game, at the same time taking no big risks. When the last man came in he had not made his hundred, but the newcomer proved equal to the occasion. In the end Russell carried his bat for perhaps the best innings of his life. Hampshire lost five wickets for 67 before the day’s play ended, and although the tail made an unexpected resistance, thanks chiefly to good cricket by Mr. Barrett, it was obvious that a severe defeat was in store for the visitors.
