Cricket 1898

J ctly 28, 1898. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 301 KENT t . ESSEX. Played at Leyton on July 21, 22 and 23. Drawn. What might have been a very interesting milch was spoiled by the rain on Fi iday, which put an end to play at one o’clock. For two or three hours things went extremely well with Kent. Mr. Burnup and Mr. Mason were both in splendid form, and after Alec Hearne had been dismissed for a moderate score, completely collared the bowling, putting on 117 for the second wicket in an hour and a half. Then came a remarkable collapse, the Kent batsmen being unable to make head or tail of the bowling of Young. Essex began well, and at close of play had lost a wicket for 76—Carpenter 34 and Mr. Owen not out 35. The 76 was made into 137 for three wickets on Friday, before the rain came. On Saturday, Mr. Perrin played most patient cricket, his innings of 106 not out lasting for six hours and a half; it was of the greatest value to his side, partly because it took such a loi>g time to make. Mr. Owen Russell and Mr. Lucas also played well, and although Wright disposed of the tail very quickly, the total exceeded that of Kent by 54. There was, however, no chance of finishing the match, and after Alec Hearne had been badly run out, Mr. Burnup and Mr. Mason easily played out time. It is a pity that there was not time enough for Mr. Burnup to try to make a double>hundred in the match. C. J. Burnup, c Mead, b Kortright .......131 H earn e (Alec), c Young, b Mead ... 22 J. R. Lancashire won by an innings and 24 runs. Fine all-round cricket by the Lancashire team, more especially by Mr. Eccles, Ward, Tyldesley, Cuttell and Baker, pointed to an easy victory for the visitors. The Leicestershire batting was not good on the whole, but Brown and Coe played splendid cricket. In the follow-on. Brown and Coe again very greatly distinguished themselves, and Mr. Stocks played another of his useful innings, but the lead gained by Lancashire was altogether too great. L an cash ire . C. R.
