Cricket 1898

270 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J uly 14, 1898. makicg any headway against them ; his innings, and that of Mr. Fry, were the chief features of the game on Thursday. \Vhen stumps were drawn Sussex had a blight adt antage, for Lancashire were 23 runs behind with one viclset to fall. The last wicket only added live run*, so that Sussex entered on their second inn ings with a lead of 28. Agiin Mr. Fry and Mr. Newham played well, and the captain, although he was so lame ihat he had to pet Mr. Brann to run for him, played a very fine innings of nearly fifty. Mr. Newham was batting for an hour and a half for 28. Lancashire had to make lfcO. Of thesethey had scored 113 for four wickets when play ended on Friday night. For this they hid chiefly to thank Tyldesley and Cuttell, who were both not out at the end of the day. On Saturday morning both these men coniinued to play fine (ricket. and although Tyldehley was out jurt b*fore he had reached his hundred, the home team won easily. On*i cf the peculiarities of the match was ihe way ia whir-h B»ker managed to bowl out the Sussex men in the second innings when all the ordi- dary Lancashire towlers could do very little. During the match there was one or two unsatisfactory decisions. S u s s e x . First innings. Second innings. G. Brann, lbw, b Briggs ... 10 runout................. 2 C. b. The club has scored 1,413 runs for flfty-one wickets—average, S8 per wicket; opponents have scored 1,501 for seventy-five wickets— average, 20 per wichet. The most successful bowlers have been Welchman, Williams and Batchelor. Williams has been by far the most successful bats man, scoring 311 runs in six inning*. Douglas contributed a very fine and dashing innings of 71 against M.C C.. his cricket being quite up to county form. Goldsmith, Welchman and Reichert have also batted consistently. The fielding on the whole has ]been very good, Reichert and W. H. Bar ham bringing cff several go )d catches. In all, it has been-quite a record week, the attendance of visitors being very, larire each day, and considering that Bradley only played on Saturday, the results prove that the club is one of the very strongest in London. Monday—Wanstead beaten by 120 runs. [See Cricket, July 7 ] Tuesday-Sidcup t eaten by S44 runs. Wednesday-Drew with M.C.C. Thursday—West Kent W’anderera teaten by 102 runs. Friday—Drew with Spencer. Saturday—Sutton beaten t-y 110 runs. The fact that 2 914 runs were made during the week tpeaks volumes for the ptrfect condition of the ground, and Peter Morley was the recipient of well- deserved congratulations on the result of his work as groundman. One of the features of the week was the al fresco concert on the clob ground, under the direction of Mr. Lionel J. Selfe, who provided an excellent programme for the entertainment of the visitors and friends of members, «>f whom there were probably a thou and present in front of the pavilion, which was brihiantly illuminated. Ihe items were all most successfully carried out, and much well- merited applause given by an appreciative audience. The artistes all performed excellently, and the pro ceedings terminated at 10.30 with the National Anthem. The peiformers who contribute j, w^re the Misses Grose and Tickle. Messrs. Gould, Cockell, C. R. Selfe, Irving and Knighton-Small. The humorous songs of Messrs. Irving and Knighton- Small caused great amu-ement, and received well- merited encores. The Club were indebted to Mr. Trotter for his valuable assistance as accompanist, a s-rvice which this gentleman always so readily volunteers at all the musical functions of the Forest Hill Cricket Club.
