Cricket 1898
266 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J olt 14, 1898. ever afterwards looked upon as one of the cMef supports of the Gentlemen’s team, although after 1877 he did not play in first-class cricket as often as before—not that he had by any means fallen off in his play. His best season was 1868, when he was recognised as the batsman who approached nearest to the great W.G. In this year he made 165 for the Gentle men against the Players, an innings which is still spoken of by those who saw it as a marvellous performance. One of his greatest feats was to put on 324 runs in partnership with the Hon. Alfred Lyttelton in 1883 (his last year but one of first-class cricket) for Middlesex against Gloucestershire, at Clifton. This was at the time a record, and although it is a record no longer, it is a question whether any partnership of the same number of runs ever lasted such a short time. Details of such performances were not as carefully worked out in 1883 as they are in these days, and all that is known about the partnership is that 226 of the runs were put on in an hour and three-quarters. In one of the matches between Cambridge University and Sus sex, at Brighton, there was some pheno- minal scoring by two or three of the Cambridge men, who were told that the innings would be closed at a certain time, and it may be that the rate of scoring iu this match was higher than that of Mr. Walker and Mr. Lyttelton. At the close of Mr. Walker’s first-class career in 1884, his character as a cricketer was summed up as follows in Cricket for December 25: “ Like his brother, V. E., he is one of the most able tacticians modern cricket has produced. He is a thorough j udge of the game, well versed in everything appertaining to it, and has all the best qualities of a captain, never losing his head, and inspiring the greatest confidence in his men. As a batsman there are very few better even now. Making the most use of his height, he stands up fear lessly to the fastest bowling, and until recently, and then on very exceptional occasions, altogether discarded the protec tion of pads. His defence is very good, and his hitting, particularly on the off-side, brilliant; as good, indeed, as any we have ever seen. In the field he is certainly with out a superior. As he covered a great deal of ground, he was very good at long-leg or cover-point, but his favourite position has been at mid-off, and in that he is still unequalled, being an unerring citch. Though of late he has hardly tried his hand enough, he is also a very good lob- bowler, and only last summer for Middle sex against Gloucestershire, at Lord’s, he secured ten -wickets at a cost of 52 runs.” Summary of county matches in which Against.
