Cricket 1898

J uly 7, 1898. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 261 for three, only 50 behind the Sussex total. Thus the outlook for the visitors was not bright. But although Lord Hawke was again in great form, and Hirst and Denton also, the end of the innings came much sooner than was anticipated, for the tail did very little. Nevertheless. Yorkshire had a lead of 93 runs. After a good beginning by Mr. Brann and Mr. Fry, the former got well set with his captain, and the Yorkshire bowling was collared. So well did the two men bat that they seemed almost certain to play out time. The runs had been knocked off, and an extra 71 put to the credit of the couoty. Then occurred a sad collapse against the bowling of Brown, and when stumps were drawn five wickets were down, and Sussex were only 85 runs to the good. Yesterday the tail did next to nothing, and Yorkshire won with ease. S u s s e x . First innings. Marlow, c Bairstow, b Rhodes ........................ 2 G. Brann, b Rhodes ..........10 W. L. On the first day of this match, Lancashire com pleted an innings, and sent Notts in for an over. To pUy out the inconvenient few minutes, Mr. Dixon took J. Gunn to the wickets with him, and no accident happened, so that Notts started on the following morning with a clean sheet. The Lancashire batting was very sound neirly all through the team, and the best innings ringed from 43 to 82. Sugg and Mr. Hartley made the top scores; j ust at present they are two of the most dangerous batsmen in England. On Tuesday momiog, air. Dixon played beautiful cricket. After J. Gunn wa* out for 5. Shrewjbury came in. For som^ twenty minutes he was content to sample the bowling without breaking his duck, but when he had once got his eye in. he very soon began to catch up his partoer. Not that this meant that he scored with remarkable quickness, for Mr. Dixon was batting three hours and a quarter for 65. Shrewsbury made 92 in five hours and a half. It was very slow cricket, but it saved Notts from defeat without the slightest doubt, for the rest of the team failed badly. In their second innings Lancashire declared when Ward was approaching his hundred, but Not's had no difficulty in playing out time. L ancashire . Second innings. First innings.
