J u l y 7, 1898 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 259 detailed account of his career is necessary than could be given in Cricket at such short notice, and a Chat about him will appear in the next issue. O ur war telegrams :— [ from our special correspondent .] Off Santiago, Tuesday. Cervera’s team has been ignominiously de feated by an innings and any amount to spare. The batting of the Spaniards was paltry in the extreme, and the fact that everything was vastly in favour of the bowlers is no excuse for their miserable performance. It is true that their bats were mostly antiquated, while some of the men had to go in without bats at all, since they had lent their own to the Santiago team, but all the credit belongs to the Americans for taking such prompt advantage of their opponents’ weakness. N.B.—I believe that this is the correct way to sit on a beaten team when it is notoriously weak. Near Santiago, Sunday. Such a time have I had of i t ! The authori tieshave provided absolutely noaccommodation for the Press, so that your representative has been obliged to wander about the field of play in imminent danger of being struck by pass ing balls, for the whole playing area is taken up by various matches, and men bowl wildly, and balls are flying over the field. Already some members of the Press have been hit in the epigastrum. As far as I can make out the Americans have won all along the line, but some of the Spanish bowlers were very deadly. Near Santiago. [Delayed in transmission.] Mr. Dynam. I. T. Gunn, who is, as far as I can gather, no relation of the famous Notts professional, has been placed hors de combat. Much had been hoped from his bowling, which is of a particularly deadly kind, but he has rheumatism in the joints of his arm. F o r the benefit of our many foreign find colonial readers we append the county championship table up to date (Wednesday night). According to the rule laid down by the M.C.C., “ one point shall be reckoned for each win, one deducted for each loss; unfinished games shall not be reckoned. The county which during the season shall have in finished matches obtained the greatest propor tional number of points shall be reckoned champion county.” B y an ingenious mathematical computation it is possible to arrive at an estimate of the “ propor tional number of points ” obtained by each county up to the present time, but only advanced mathematicians should attempt the solution of the problem :— Played.
