238 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une 30, 1898. SUSSEX v. OXFORD UNIVERSITY. Played at Brighton on June 23, 24 and 25. Drawn. But for the rain which fell on Thursday night, the University would most likely have given the Sussex bowlers h . bad time of it, for against a total of 301 they had put up no less than 98 for the loss of one wicket when stumps were drawn. There was no play on Friday. On Saturday, Bland f .und the wicket in his favour, and most of th« Oxford team collapsed. Fortunately for the University, Mr. Lee played a fine innings of 66 not out, and as he was well backed up by Morres the follow-on was easily saved. There was very litt'e chance of finishing the match, but the Sussex captain declared about an hour and three- quarters before lime. Mr. Brann, Mr. Fry, Mr. Ne#hamand Mr. Montezuma and, not lea«t, Parris, were ♦■h* Sussex batsmen who di-tioguished them selves. Ia the first innings, Mr. Fry was no-balled by Phillips for throwing. A judicious exercise by the Kent captain of his power to declare the innings closed was the cause that this match, which seemed likely to end in a draw, was turned into a brilliant victory. Somerset made a shockingly bad start in the first innings, but 1hanks to a fine stand by Mr. Woods and Mr. Fowler, the score was increased by 125 in fifty minutes for the sixth wicket. Mr. Woods, who was partnered by Mr. Fowler, made8S in an hour by some of the finest cricket seen durirg the season, while Mr. Fowler carried hi* bat for 83, an innings which can hardly be too highly praised. Kor once, Mr. Masondid very littie for Kent, tut Mr. Patterson and Alec Hearne each made over 80 before stumps were drawn, and on the morrow each increased their score to over 110. During their partnership th'-.y put on 220 runs in three hours and a quarter for the second wicket, which was by no means slow scoring. They both played splendid cricket. After their departure very little was done in the way of batting by either side, for on account of heavy rain no play was possible on Friday, while on Saturday the bowlers had matters uearlyall'their own way. When his side was only 61 runs on, Mr. Mason declared his innings, with the result that Somerset shire were disposed of a second time. Kent easily knocked off the runs required to win. S om erset . Played at Gloucester on June 23, 24 and 25. Abandoned. This match, which might have been one of the most interesting of the season, was brought to a premature conc usion on Friday night, the raiu preventing a ball from being bowled on Saturday, bloucestershire got rid of their opponents pretty cheaply in th-j first inn ings, foron a.go.id wicket Lan ashire might reasonably have looked forward to a much bigger total than 262 against the w^ak bowling of the Western county. Fortunately for Gloucestershire, however, Roberts and Mr. Townsend were both in good form. Sugg played another fine innings, and it is not unlikely, now that hi- run of bad luck has taken a good turn, that he may make a lot of goo t scores. Cuttell and Mr. Tindall w«rr ialso in great form. The latter, whose demerits htve beea mo t psivjiitently harp )d u^oa by s -ms of his critics in Lancashire, will probably be allowed to remain in peace for some little time after his innings of 57. Gloucestershire had to thank Mr. Townsend almost entirely for doing so well in batting, for hemade more than half the runs obtained, and made them in excellent form. Wrathall played a very useful innings. When Lancashire went in a second time they were 43 runs behind. Before stumps were drawn on Friday evening they had knocked off the runs and were 78 to the good for the loss of three wickets, so that the game was in a very interesting state. Then came the rain.
