Jon e 23, 1898. CRICKET: A 'WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 227 THE TONBRIDGE FESTIVAL. KENT v. WARWICKSHIRE. riayed at Tonbridge on June 20, 21, and 22. Kent won by an innings and 201 runs. The Ton*ridge Festival has become as much an ins'.itution as the f.stivals at Canterbury, Hastings, aud ScMrborou«h, and the inhabitants of the pretty K-nt town enter into the spiritof the week with great heartiness. There is no more enthusiastic or g>od- humiured crowd to be found on any ground than at Tonbridge. If K.nt does well so much the better; if not, no contempt is shewn for the repre-entatives of the cojnty. The Festival began in grext form with a splendid display of batting on Monday by sime of the chief favourites in tin Kent t am. Mr. Mason and Hearne in their different styles pat on 169 for the first wicket; Mr. Rashleigh made s >me of the delightful hits for which he is famous. Easby, to (he joy of the crowd, played a bold and hard-hitting innings; and Mr. Patterson in his most grasaful s'yle easily made his hundred. As he was not out at the close of the day, great hopes were entertained that he would not I e unfortunate enough ro get out at once on the following morning. On Tuesday he brought his to:al to 117. The tail all played up well, so that the total was very large. During the innings Hopkins was no ballad by Titch- mareh for throwing. Warwickshire, who weie obliged to take the field without Mr. Bainbiidge, * ere so tire I by their Jong outing in tin field that they altogether fai'ed to do thems Ives justice in the fir 4, innings, but in the follow-on Diver, De/ey, and W. G. Q laife played splendid cricket. K ent . J. R. Mason, c Wil liams, b Santall ... 91 Hearne (&,.), c Wil liams, b Santall ... 78 W. H. Patterson, c Williams, b Hop\ir.sll7 Rev. W. After having much the bf-st of the game on the first day, during which only Tyldesley, Hallows, and Mr. Palairet made good scores. Lancashire gave a won derfully find exhibition of batting in their second innings. In the first innings t>iey had at one time lost five wickets for only 54 runs, but a fine stand of 97 by Ty!d-*8ley and Hallows stepped the rot. When they went in again. Ward waain his very best form ; while Sugg, who had beenso much out of form that he hid been left out of the team for a match or two, surpassed himself. He made 169 in three hours, hitting in his m:>st brilliant minner. Somerset hal to make no less than 64), and althmgh they had no possible chince of winning, they gave a remarkable display of batting. Mr. Woods played an innings of 85 which only lasted for 50 minutes, hitting everything with refreshing vigour. Tyler also played a hitting innings, ana Mr. R. C. N. Palairet was ia fine form. Played at Leeds on June 20, 21 and 22. Drawn. An exceedingly bad beginning by Notts, on a good wicket, was redeemed by a determined, though very lucky, innings of nearly a hundred by Attewell. Shrewabuiy was run out when he was comfortably set, or the result might have been different. As things turned out, none of the chief batsmen in the team distinguished themselves, and it seemed but a small matter for Yorkshire to have to go in against a score of only 215. Yorkshire had about an hour’s batting before stumps w»*re drawn, and lost Mo.»r- house and Tunnicliife for 57, which was not a particularly good start. Brown was not out 41, a very well-played innings. On Tuesday morning a drizzling rain set in. Yorkshire did well in the short time during which it was possible to play cricket, although Mr. Jackson was out for a small fccore. When rain stopped play, tbe total was 1(2 for 3 wickets. This was not a state of affairs as satis factory as could have been wished by the home team, for there was a probability that after the rain the wicket would help the bowlers a good deal. The probabi ity was turned into a certainty when the game was resumed on Wednesday, and Yorkshire collapsed, though Denton played a plucky innings. Notts did fairly well when they went in again, and were able to declare. Shrewsbury played beautiful cricket until he was run out for the second time in the match, and the third time within a week. York shire had a very trying time before they managed t > make a draw. N otts . First innings. A. O.
