Cricket 1898
June 23, 1898. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 217 HAMPSHIRE v. LEICESTERSHIRE. Played at Southampton on June 16,17 and 18. Hampshire won by 145 runs. After a period of disappointing f liluro, the Hamp- shire team at last distinguished itself. Fortunately for the county, CaptainWynyard made hi* re-appear ance in the team, and as he Scored 44 and 140, b asides taking a couple of wickets and making four catches, the victory was not a little due to his efforts. His 140 was made in less than three hours. He was splendidly backed up by Barton, who made a huadred in the firat innings, while Mr. Hill, Mr. Robson, and Mr. Heseltine all distinguisheI themselves with the bat. With the bowling, although nobody did an extraordinary perform nee, there was lit le fault to be found. Leiee-rei shire never recovered from a we ik display by th? te?t men in their tirst innings. The tail did well, but they were not able to make up for the failure of their comrades. In the second innings the whole side showed up well. But what was needed was a few big scoies and as, with the exception of Knight, no one was able to make more thaa SO, Hampshire won Without any difficulty. H am psh ire . First innings. SURREY v. LANCASHIRE. Hayed at Old Trafford on June 16, 17 and 18. Abandoned. Tn the absence of Hayward, who was stiil too un well to play, and of Mr. Crawford, who stood down, Surrey tried Hayes and Holland. The choice of tbe latter turce 1out to be admirable. The result of the first day’s cricket was satisfactory as far as Lan cashire was concerned, for they completed an innings t3ik*’ ^anks in great m-.asure to a s *ries of missed catches. Mr. Hait ey,wko made the biggest score of r 1®day, was exceptionately fortunate, for when he naade only 12 runs he ought to have been bowled by Smith.butthe ball hit the wicket without removing the bails, while without increasing his score he gave a chance to Abel in the slips, and that very tafe li-ld aroppsd the ball; he also gave other chances. The partnership for the first wicket, between Ward and Mr. Hartley, produce 1 102 runs ; that between the latter and Tyldesley 91 runs, ani that between Tyldebley and Baker 48 runs. By this time it looked as if Lancashire were going to make a very large score indeed, but except for a good innings of 35 by Mr. Stoddart, and a lively 42 by Btiggs at the end of the innings, very little was done by tne batsmen. On the f -llowing morning, Brockwell was at once dis posed of. Then ca*ne the stand of 1he match. Abel and Holland, after playing themselves in with care— the first hour’s cricket only realising 26 runs—began to take charge of the bowling, which was made to look particularly easy. It was not until the total wis 214 that Holland wa9 ^ell caught in the slips after playing very sound cricLet for nearly three hours and a qutrter, during which the total had been increased by 237. So far everything looked exceedingly well for Surrey. But from this time the bowlers tejan to take a hand in the game, snd although Abel was twice m;s3ed after Holland had gone, he was at last disp sed of for 148—a patient innings which had lasted for fi.-e hours and a quarter, and the rest of the t?am could mike no headway. When stumps were drawn, however, the t- tal had reached 350 for eight wicke's, thanks t> the long stand for the second wickdt. On f*atur lay a few overs were bowled, and Lockwood made a few good hits. But rain came do jhj, and the match had to be abandoned. ; L ancashire .
