Cricket 1898

202 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. Juste 16, 1898. (Sovregponticnce. SPECTACLE MAKERS. To the Editor of Cricket. Silt,—The Rev. Robert Stratten Holmes, in his capital brochure , “ The County Cricket Championship, 1873-96,” tabulates “ spec tacles” most carefully. I have, however, not seen recorded instances of ‘ ‘ double spec tacles,” in tabular form, or a table of batsmen being dismissed first ball in each innings. In conjunction with my friend, Mr. F. S. Ashley-Cooper, we have, during the winter months, made a “ oareful survey,” and have discovered the following :— DOUBLE SPECTACLES. J q |W. Wrathall, Gloucester v. Surrey, 1897. jj q |FraLk Ward, Lancashire v. Surrey, 1890. j H. Tebay, Sussex v. Surrey 1890. In the following list, batsmen being dismissed first ball in each innings has, naturally, required much research, owing to the fact not being tabulated in every case in the several excellent cricket annuals. Pei haps, if you will kindly allow me a space to venti late tho instances in Cricket , discrepances (if any) and additions may be supplied. BATSMEN- DISMISSED FIRST BAT L IN EACH INNINGS IN FIRST-CLASS CRICKET. Frederick Coward, Lancashire v. Surrey, Oval, 1863. ^A. Ilearne, Kent v. Surrey, Oval, 1894. T. Humphrey, Surrey v. Surrey, Oval, 1893. A. J. Webbe. Middlesex v. Surrey, Lord’s, 1892. W . Yardley, South v. North, Lord’s, 1872. Fuller Pilch, too, was credited with same in 1847. Very faithfully youra, ALFRED J.
