A QU AR TER OF A CEN TU R Y ’S U N IV E R S IT Y CR ICKET . (Continuedfrom page 181.) 1885. It would be difficult to name a year in which both ’Varsity sides did so badly as in 1885. Oxford’s record was decidedly the worse, for the Dark Blues did not win a match, and both the drawn games were decidedly against them, while four of the six losses were by big margins. Cambridge won one match, that with Oxford; drew four, two favourably, one unfavourably, and one evenly; and lost four, all by decisive margins. Their opponents averaged only 2*6 runs per wicket better than they did, how ever, whereas Oxford’s were 8*3 ahead. On the whole, therefore, Cambridge’s record was decidedly superior, bad though it was, to that of 1884. Oxford’s was so much worse that one might almost have imagined that she had lost all the best of her 1881 players. Yet such was not the case. Two good men had gone down—Kemp and Hine-Haycock ; but the rest were all available, though Nicholls did not get his Blue again. The cause of the inferior form of the team was, beyond doubt, a simultaneous decline of form on the part of the principal players, such as is, happily, but rarely seen. It was in the bowling—the strongest point of the 1884 team—that this decline was principally shown; and this, despite the fact that in A. H. J. Cochrane the side had a recruit whose name is numbered among the best of Dark Blue bowlers. Whitby fell off terribly, and was quite harmless; Bastard and Page, though they got wickets, were much more erpensive ; and Buckland, whose small share of the bowling had been so effective in 1884, had two wickets at a cost of 120 runs each ! Of the leading batsmen, Brain and Hildyard had decidedly better figures ; Page and Key fell off but slightly; but O’ Brien did very little, and there was no one to fill the place of Hine-Haycock, whose steadiness had been of great value both in 1883 and 1884. Bolitho, who had played in 1883, but not in 1884, re-appeared, and the two new men were A. E. Newton, of Somerset fame, a really first-class wicket-keeper, and Cochrane, who was far ahead of his comrades in the bowling averages. There were four changes in the Cambridge team. J. E. K. Studd and II. G. Topham were no longer avail able ; the Hon. J. W. Mansfield, who had done nothing to justify his place in 1884, had also gone down; and Ppiro did not get his Blue again. The new men were C. D. Buxton, G. M. Kemp, and C. Toppin; and the Hon. M. B. Hawke, who had not played against Oxford in 1881, came back into the team, and was elected captain. Though Studd was a loss—and it seemed strange to see a Light Blue team without a single member of the famous brotherhood which had done so much for it from 1879 to 1891— and Toppin was not quite as good a bowler as Topham, the changes certainly did not weaken the side as a whole. Of the other players, Turner, Wright, and Marchant did much better with the bat than in 1884, but Kock and de Paravicini fell below their form of that season. J.N.P. MILL HILL v.
