III.—THE BOWLERS. In 1878 J. Robertson and A. H. Strat ford did most of the bowling, each ob taining twenty-nine wickets, whilst in the following season A. F. J. Ford had most wickets to his credit—thirty-eight. In 1880 A. F. J. Ford and Clarke, whose first season it was with Middlesex, headed the bowling averages, the former claiming thirty-two victims and the latter thirty. In 1881 Burton made his first appearance for the county, and at the end of the season was credited with thirty-six wickets, Mr. C. T. Studd being second with twenty- seven. Burton played twelve years for the county, 1881-1891 (inclusive) and also in 1893, during which time his bowling was of the greatest value to his side ; in 1891, however, he only appeared twice and in 1893 but once. The seasons of 1882 and 1883 again saw C. T. Studd and Burton at the top of the averages. In 1881, 1885, 1886, 1887 and 1888, Barton and J. Robertson took most wickets, whilst in 1889, E. A. Nepean took the place of the latter. Duriug the last eight years the bowling performances of J. T. Hearne have been one of the most interesting features in connection with Middlesex cricket. His first appearance for the county of his adoption—he was born at Chalfont St. Giles, in Buckinghamshire— was in 1888, when he formed one of the eleven elected to do battle for the county against the sixth Australian team. On that occasion he took two wickets for nine teen runs, but was unfortunate enough to score spectacles. In 1890 he was given another trial, and the club then found what it had not possessed since Howitt’s day—a first-rate fast bowler. Hearne’s performances with the ball stamp him as the best bowler the county has ever had. Rawlia, who first played for the county in 1889, has also rendered considerable help in disposing of the county’s oppo nents, and for many seasons he and Hearne have borne the brunt of the attack. Next year, when A. E. Trott becomes qualified and takes his place in the eleven, the county will possess a very formidable trio of bowlers. In the follow ing statistics maiden overs are ignored and the number of balls sent down by each bowler is given instead of the number of overs delivered, as in some years the over consisted of four balls, and in others of five.
