Cricket 1898
J unk 9, 1898. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 183 SUSSEX v. SOMERSET. Played at Eastbourne on June 2, 3, and 4. Somerset won by 108 runs. When Sussex went in to baton Saturday afternoon, after a brilliant innings by Mr. Woods had saved Somerset from any possibility of defeat, it can hardly have occurred to any one on the ground that the game would end in a decisive victory for the visiting county. The earlier stages of the game pointed to a victory for Sussex, who, in the first innings, had a lead of 69 runs, thanks almost entirely to a remarkably good 118 by Mr. Brann, who, suiting himself to the wicke*, hit much harder than he has lately been in the habit of doing. It was a really great innings. Mr. Woods has teen known on previous occasions to treat the Sussex bowling in an unmerciful manner, but he has perhaps never done a finer performance for his county than his innings ( f 143, when Somerset went in a second time. While the other batsmen were feeling their way warily, and making runs with great difficulty, he took charge of the bowline: in the most inspiriting manner, hitting with such freedom that he made 143 out of a total of 173 in two hours and a quarter. The result of his wonderful batting, and the useful scores made by Mr. Hill, Mr. Trask, and Nicholls, Sussex had to make 219 with an hour and fifty minutes before them. Under these circumstances, Sussex, of course, settled down to play simply for a draw. There seemed no interest left in the match, and the score slowly advanced until five wickets were down for 77. But 50 minutes still remained to play. Then Mr. Woods put himself on to bowl. The result was startling, for wicket after wicket fell until, when time was almost up, the last man was out. It was a totally unexpected result. The only two batsmen who distinguished themselves in this innings were Mr. Brann and Mr. Newham, who both played the right game with success. S omerset . All interest in this match was teken away by the rain, which prevented any cricket from being played on Thursday and Saturday. On Friday, also, there v ere interruptions. W. G. Quaife and Mr. Mason played fine cricket, but for the most part the bowlers carried everything before them, Martin and Hopkins doing very well. The game was in a veiy even position on Friday night.
