J une 9, 1898. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 181 J. E. K . Studd, H . G. Topham , J. A . Turner and C. W . W right. Studd w on the toss for C am bridge; but his side made very little use of the advantage. W hitby took six wickets for 51; and the total was 111, D e Paravicini top scorer with 37. T he two cracks, the captain and Bain- bridge, made only 6 between them. H ine- H aycock (40) and Brain (42) sent up 63 for the first O xford w ick et; Page (25) and H ine- H aycock added 46 for the third ; and N icholls (35) and Bastard (17) actually made 52 for the ninth b y good, determined hitting. The total was 209. In their second innings the Cantabs fared better. W righ t made 34 of the first 43 ; and then R ock, partnered first by Studd, whose thare was 28 of 50, aud then by Bainbridge, who helped to add 67, made a great effort for his tide. H e scored 56, and was then caught at the wicket. The total was then 160 for four. Bainbridge left at 164 for 29, and then so remarkable a collapse occurred that the innings was all over for 177. W hen O xford went in to get 80 to win, llock followed up his fine batting performance by clean b ,w ling Brain with his second ball, and O ’Brien w ith his third, before a run was scored. H ine-H aycock and Page, however, took the score to 6 1 before Page was out for 38 ; and no other wicket fell, Oxford winning by seven wickets, and H ine-H aycock carrying his bat for a capital 35, for which he had batted nearly an hour and a half. R ock had bowled fourteen overs for 13 runs and two wickets. Marchant and O ’ Brien both made “ a pair of them .” PRINJIPAL AVERAGES. B atting . Not H ’st Inns. out. Runs. A<er. score. M. C.
