Cricket 1898
172 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J dne 2, 1898. SUSSEX v. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. Played at Brighton on May 30, 31, and June 1. Abandoned. Thanks to some fine howling by Bland, Sussex got rid of Gloucestershire in the first innings much more quickly than seemed probable at one time. Cricket was for the most part carried on under difficulties, bnt in the course of the first day fair progress was made, Gloucestershire completing an innings for ‘228 and Sussex putting up 49 without loosing a wicket. The Doctor was in fine form, but was disposed of just in time, f r he had become well set when his innings of 36 came to an end. Very good cricket was shewn by Mr. Townsend in scoring his 63, and Mr. Jessop played in his usual vigorous style for F6. Matters did not look very well for Sussex on Tuesday morning, as all the best bats were disposed of pretty cheaply, although without exception they made double figures. The turning point of the innings was the partnership of Parris and Cox, who gainfd quite a mastery over the bowling. Their partnership was succeeded by another by Butt and Cox, and the score rose so rap’dly that the Gloucestershire total was passed by 78 The leewav was made up bv Gloucestershire for the loss of Mr. Sewell, who played excellent ciicket for 49. At the end of the day, W.G. was not out 21 and the total 79—one run on. Three wickets quickly fell on Wed nesday morning, but when Mr. Jessop joined W.G. there was some very lively cricket. They were together at one o’clock, when rain came down, and, after a long wait, the game was abandoned. G loucestershire . First innings. Second innings. W. G. Played at Old Traffotrd on May 30, 31 and June 1. Abandoned. Manchester did not long keep up the sudden repu tation which it gained last week when it was the only place in England where it was possible to play anything like serious cricket, and on Monday there was less than half an hour’s batting. When play was abandoned for the day Lancashire had scored 14 without losing a wicket. On Tuesday the game was resumed after luncheon but only for a few minutes, and on Wednesday there was no play. Played at Leyton on May 30, 31, and June 1. Abandoned. On a slow wicket Essex played an attractive game on Monday, especially during the first part of their innings. Essex was without Mr. A. J. Turner. A very good beginning was made by Mr. Owen and Carpenter. The latter seems to be suited by the slower wickets. f«'r he is in great form this season; his 51 was made by s^und and inteiesting batting. The highest innings of the day was played by Mr. McGahey, wlo, after starting very slowly, hit very freely at the end of the innings, when he was partnered by Mr. Bull for the last wicket. The tail were not very happy with the bowling of Woodcock and Coe. After an hour’s baiting Leicestershire had scored 45 for the loss of Mr. Wood, when play was abandoned for ihe day on account of the bad light. 1 here was no play on Tuesday and Wednesday. H. G. Drawn. Despite several interruptions caused by rain, there was a fair day’s cricket on Monday, and Warwickshire with a total of 187 for nine wickets had no cause for disatisfaction, as the odds were considerable that by the time that Yorkshire could bat runs would take a lot of getting. On Monday the wicket was slow, but not absolutely difficult. Lilley’s innings of 62 was the feature of the day’splav, but Mr. Bainbridge and W . G. Quaife also made good scores. On Tues day rain again caused several interruptions before the Warwickshire inuings was closed, the last wicket putting on 34. Play was then abandoned for the day. On ‘Wednesday, Yorkshire had to bat under great difficulties, and only just escaped having to follow on. Warwickshire did not greatly shine in their second innings, but they were able to declare, and leave an hour and fifty minutes’ battingto Yorkshire, wbo played out time without any difficulty.
