Cricket 1898

J une 2, 1898. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 167 LANCASHIRE v. WARWICKSHIRE. Played at Liverpool on May 26, 27 and 28, Warwickshire won by 142 runs. The failure of the Lancashire tiam to make any headway against L*ices?ershire must have made Warwickshire men ftel that Ihey. too, might hope to at least run the champion county close if fortune favoured them. But it was almost too much to think of victory. Nevertheless, laigely by good play and partly by good luck they had the upper hand of their opponents all through the match. The first day's cricket placed them in a very satisfactory positn n, for after making 178 runs they succeeded in getting rid of seven Lancashire men for 67. On the following morning ihe three other wickets M l for the addition of 27 runs, and the visitors thus had a useful lead <f 8*. As they nearly all playfd excellent cricket in their second inniDgs, especially Lilley and Mr Glover, they were alle to put Lancashire in to make 318 to win, which, on a not very easy wicket, meant exceedingly hard work. At one time it seemed that the champions would be beaten very Iadly. for when seven wickets were down the score was or ly 108. A long stand by Sugg and Cuttell, who both played a good game, made matters look much better; but the beating was a decisive one. Doubtless, the excellent bowling of Bantall, and the batting of W. G. Quaife and Lilley on the first day, had much to do with the result of the match. W arwickshire . First innings. Second innings. H. W . Hearne took seven wickets for 57 runs; many others bowled well without doing anything brilliant. There v ere four good innings, three by Leicestershire men, which were much above the average. Knight, who is in great form just now, almost made his hundred in the second innings, and his runs were scored at a time when there did not seem much chance that his county would pull off the match. Ano her big innirgs was the 85, not out, of Dr. Thorn’on for the M.C.C. ; he came to the rescue of his side when wickets were falling in a very unpron.i<irg manner. The other two innings were those of Mr. Wood and Coe. Mr. de Trafford is still unalle to break his iun of bad luck in batting. L eicestershire . Quaife (W . G.),bM old Diver, b Mold .............. Although Leicestershire were disappointed of win ning iheir match against Lancashire, who managed to make a draw against them when they had much tte worst of the game, they showed by their perfor mance against the M.C.C. that they are in decidedly better foim than last year—at any rate, on wicket* which are not perfect. To beat the M.C.C. team cannot be described as a great victory, for the club was not very strongly represented, although the eleven was well balanced. Played at Southampton on May 26 and 27. Yorkshire won by an innings and 79 runs. It was exceedicgly unfoitura'e for Baldwin, who has for many years done good service for Hampshire, that on the first day of this match theie was no p ay, owing to rain, while on the second day the wicket so gre.tly helped the lowlers. that the game was finished by the evening. There was nothing r»mark- able in tue collap>e of liamp h re. Th*-y had a weak team, and the wicket exactly suited Haigh. Possibly, if som»bo ’y could have knocked him off, a tetter show would have been made, but it is n -t very eisy to get the masttry over a towler like Uaigh when he gets his chance, and there weie very few men on the Hampshije side who could 1ave doi e it, even with a large amount of luck. Toe Yorkshire- men were, as a rule, unsuccessful in batting, but Tunnicliffe came off, and played a remarkably good ionings. H ampshire . Hearne (A ), retired hurt. Chatterton, b Coe...
