Cricket 1898
164 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J cne 2, 1898. scorer with 57, making altogether 148 of the 326 from the bats of the Dark Blues. Whitby had five wickets for 40 in Lancashire’s first. For the County O. P. Lancashire made 21 and 65, F. Taylor 41 and 23, Briggs 30 and 25, and Barlow 48 in the second innings. Surrey was beaten at the Oval by 90 runs, a result almost entirely due to the first six batsmen on the Dark Blue side, for none of the last five made double figures in either innings, and Page’s 6 for 64 was the best bowling analysis. Hine-Haycock scored 20 and 68, Page 61 and 27. Brain 43 and 30, Key 12 and 55, Kemp 44 and 16, and O’Brien 22 and 13, the whole half-dozen making double-figures in each innings. For the county Shuter played splendidly, making 46 and 76; and in the first inningj M. P. Bowden made 55, not out, and E. J. Diver 53. Bowlers had the best of the return match with M.C.C. until its last stage; although W. H. Fowler, with a good deal of luck, scored 60 (of 68 while he was in) in the first innings of the club. Woof had seven wickets for 44 in Oxford’s first attempt. When the last innings of the match came Ox ford wanted 146 to win, which, as the highest of the three innings concluded was only 154, looked a big task. Brain and Hine-Haycock putagood complexion onmatters by sending up 44 before the stonewaller was out for a dozen. Then O’Brien joined Brain, and some very vigorous play was seen. Fifty runs were added in half an hour, and 85 in all before Brain was out for a splendid 75, one of the best innings he ever played for Oxford. Four runs only were wanted to win, when O’Brien was out, lbw for a brilliant fifty, and Kemp’s wicket also fell before the necessary number was obtained. J.N.P. [To be continued.) HONOR OAK v.
