M a y 26, 1898. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 157 CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY v. YORK SHIRE. Played at Cambridge on May 23 and 24. Yorkshire won by an innings and 22 runs. On a very difficult wicket, Cambridge fared very badly against the bowling of Haigh and Rhodes, and the innings was only relieved from monotony by a rapidly-tit innings of 21 by Mr. Jessop. Yorkshire, on the other hand, did very well indeed. Six of the team made double figures, although the highest totals were 46 and 45 by Tunnicliffe and Wainwright. Each side had played an inniogs at the end of the first day, and Yorkshire had a lead of of 153. Cambridge never looked like saving the innings’ defeat, but Mr. Bur nup and Mr. Taylor played excellent cricket. C ambridge U niversity . First innings. Second innings. C. J. The team which represented Essex was by no means the strongest which the county can produce. Nevertheless, it gave a remarkably good account of itself. The scoring was so even, that although four batsmen made over 30, and fix over 20, the highest score was 39. Oxford had to go in against the formidable total (in these days of slaw wickets) of 215, and against the bowling of Mr. Bull and Mead, fared very badly, losing seven wickets for 67 before stumps were drawn, 'lhe only batsman who could do anything whatever to the bowling was Mr. Fane—himself an Essex man. He went right through the innings, as far as it went, and was not out 28. On Tuesday morning he continued to bat finely, and as he received some help from the tail, the follow-on was as nearly as possible saved. Mead bowled splendidly in both innings. E ssex .
