Cricket 1898

M a t 19, 1898. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 133 was one of the most successful bowlers. His second innings was a truly magnificent one, in spite of two or three chances, the first of which was not given until he had passed the century. H e was b a tii'g under four hours, thus scoring at the rate of about 45 an h o u r; hit seventeen 4’s, eight 3’s, nineteen 2’s, and forty-five singles; and was in while 276 were put on. Mansfield (44) helped him to add 111 for the fourth wicket, and while they were in together 70 runs were made in three-quarters of an hour. Studd actually ran up 38, while De Paravicini, ordinarily by no means a slow scorer, made a siDgle. The latter gentleman, by the way, was highest scorer in the first innings with 61, and had five wickets for 42 in the match. Henery scored 35 and 29. For Surrey, Maurice Bead made 50 in the first innings; in the second W . W. scored 56 and Shuter 45. Henderson, with quite plain straight bowling, took six wickets for 82. The M.C.C. got together a very strong team for the match at Lord’s ; but the Light Blues pulled through by 81 runs. Barnes’s 72 in the second innings was considerably the highest score for the club ; for Cam bridge, De Paravicini (40 and 65) and J. E. K. Studd (16 and 69) did splendid work. J.N .P.
