124 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. M a y 12, 1898. WARWICKSHIRE v. LEICESTERSHIRE Played at Edgbaston on May 9, 10 and 11. Abandoned. In unsatisfactory weather, and on a slow wicket, Warwickshire and Leicestershire were seen to about equal advantage on the first day of the match. Although Mr. de Trafford did not manage to break his long run of ill luck, four of the first six batsmen on his side played finely, especially Mr. Wood and King, and the total was satisfactory. Warwickshire could not do very much against the bowling of Mr. Stocks, and when stumps were drawn they were 57 runs behind with four wickets to fall—by no means a winning position on a slow wicket. Heavy rain in the night helped the batsmen on Tuesday morning more than the bowlers. Lilley played one of H^s very useful, forcing innings for 66, and in the end Warwickshire had a lead of 32. Leicestershire began fairly well and soon knocked off these runs, but with the total at 49 for two wickets rain came down, and prevented any further play. J j BICBSTERSBIRG C.
