Cricket 1898

M ay 12, 1898. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 119 THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN 1898. (Continued from page 102 .) Seven of the B r a d f i e l d Eleven of 1897 remain for this summer. Most of the second eleven of last year are still available, so that there should be little difficulty in filling the four vacant places satisfactorily, at least so far as the batting is concerned. As far as one can judge, the team should be strong in that depart ment, as the majority are capable of scoring well. Any weakness will be ia the bow ling, as three of last year’s changes have gone, and there does not seem at present to be any great promise among the likely youngsters. Still, the eleven bids fair to be fairly strong all round. MAY. 24. Bradfield, v. Gentlemen of Bucks 26. Bradfield, v. Old Wykehami'ts 28. Bradfleld, v. C. E. Keyser, Esq.’s XI. 30. Bradfleld, v. Tagart, who is captaio, will have a useful bowler in Yerrall, who is fast right-hand with a high delivery, and is likely to get a lot of wickets this summer. Painter, of Gloucestershire, is coach, with T. Toogood to assist. As most of last year’s twenty-two remain, the eleven should be fairly good. Appearances seem to suggest that they will be stronger in bowling. MAY. 21. v- Keble College, Oxford JUNE. 1. y. Liverpool Club* 8. v. Incogniti 11. v. St. Agnes 24. v. Old Cliftonians*+ 30. y . F. Cardale, H . B. - Drake, L. H . Bead and G. B. Lancaster. Am ong the new players, there is most promise in'Howell, Hathorn, Bass, Chadwick, Bull and Exdaile. Howell is a neat b a t; Hathorn and Buss, bowlers and ba ts; Chadwick and Exdaile, bowlers. Bull is a wicket-keeper as well as a fair bat. For coaches Lancing has T .C . Brown, of Sussex, Mr. H . L. Gatkin also assists. The batting and bowling ought to be both fairly strong. The wicket-keeper is new but promising. MAY. 14. Lancing, v. Worthing (2)+ 21. Lancing, v. A. L. Gaskin, Fsq.’s XI. 28. Ettinger, the captain, It. H. Spooner, W . H . P. French, R. M irryat, H . C. B. Gibson, and H . Montgomery they will have six useful old hands. Great hopes are felt with regard to Gibson, who is a slow left-hand bowler, distinctly above the average. Marryat, a fast right-hand bowler, is also expected to be of great assistance. Though at present there does not seem to be any exceptional promise among the new players, the eleven will in all likelihood be fairly strong all round. Newton and Light, both of Hampshire, with Taylor, will coach. Alec Watson will come for a month or so when the season has advanced a little. MAY. 30. T. Liverpool* JUNE. 10. v. Like Clifton, R o s s a l l has only tw o old choices remaining in L. V . Harper, the captain, and L. H . Draper. As there does not seem to be any exceptional promise among the younger players the Rossall captain will, apparently, have a rather difficult tusk. The coach is Frank Ward, of Lancashire, who has a left hand medium pace bowler to help. Mr. T. Batson, a master, and a good all round cricketer, also does useful work in c cach ing. Some more of the ground has been laid during the winter. It will hardly be ready for play till next summer, when Rossall should have a fine area for cricket. MAY. 14. Ross ill, v. Mr. M. Reynolds (the captain), R A. Williams, E. B. Noel, R. S. Darling, J. L Stow, F. D. H . Joy, S. N. Mackenzie, and L. M. Stevens. The school prospects for this summer seem particulary rosy. The two bowlers, F. D . H . Joy and L. N. Stevens, who did so well against Eton lasfcjyear, remain, and as the batting is pretty certaia to be fairly strong all round, the team should be good. W e s t m in s t e r is also fortunatein having eight of its last year’s eleven remaining. R. N. R. Blaker is the captain, with F. Young, H. R. Flack, E. E. Cjtterill, W. C. Stevens, B. H. Willett, H . R. Lonsdale, and S. M . Anderson to help him. Betides the old choices, W . V. Rayner and H. W . Beveridge, who played occasionally last year, bid fair to be use ful—the latter as a bowler. There are reasonable hopes, too, of W. S. Bompas as a wicket-keeper, as well as M. S. Thompson, like Beveridge, a promising young bowler, and E. S ’.evens. Unfor tunately, Cotteriil, who cim e on a great deal as a bat last season, is not likely to play ow ing to illness. If there are no exceptionally good men, the bow ling should be fair. The doubt is about the bitting, which doe3 not appear to be over strong. MAY. 14. Vincent Square, v. Lords and Commons 21.
