Cricket 1898
M ay 5, 1898. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 107 this match read—13-4 overs, 11 maidens, 8 wickets, 8 runs. Here are the details as they appeared in the score book :— I........... Pretoria has won the Cup this year, having played six matches and lost only one, and that against the weakest club in the competition, winning the others. Including League and friendly matches there were nine games played against Johannesburg teams this season ; seven were won and two lost. I have been busy this evening making out the averages for the season, and append A. E. Trott’s performances in South Africa. BATTING. Times Highest not Inns. Runs. Score, out. Aver. I HAVE not seen it stated anywhere that arrangements have been practically made for Mr. P. F. Warner to take another amateur team out to America in the autumn. So far he has, I am in formed, been able to secure promises from Messrs. Jones, Bathurst, Bardswell, Bull, Bray, Ford, Sewell, Burnup, and Head. O wing to very heavy rain on Friday and Saturday there was practically no “ week e n d ” cricket in the North. At Headingley Lord Hawke was to have assisted Leeds in a West Riding League match against Barnsley. In these League games a match which, on account of bad weather, is not played, counts as a draw. S e v e r a l members of the Somerset county team took part on Saturday in a match between Taunton and Quantock Lodge. Tyler scored 60, and took four wickets at a very small cost. A. E. Newton made 43. F or Brent (Somerset) v. Army Service Corps on Saturday, G. P. Butcher took five wickets, three of them in succession, in six balls. A t present Devonshire has no county cricket club, for the old county club came to an end last year. It is difficult— indeed, is is almost impossible— to induce Devonshire men to turn up in large numbers to see a cricket match ; but it is pointed out that the same difficulty applies to Cornwall, where the new county club is in a very flourishing con dition. On this subject the Western Morning News says :— “ In Cornwall, where the county club flourishes under far greater difficulties than any such organisation in Devon would have to face, the crowds which gather at the matches cannot be really described as profit able from a monetary point of view. But it is a noteworthy fact that public interest is increasing each year, and there is a thoroughly healthy rivalry prevalent amongst clubs to be represented in the county team. On the other hand, as affairs are in Devon, there is no call for ambition outside the small circle of one’ s club, and the result is that so little are the merits of players known that prac tically no interest can be stimulated even when a first-class team is brought from up country through the enterprise of one or two clubs; yet with an enterprising committee thoroughly alive to the many opportunities, a very different state of affairs could be brought about. It is, therefore, to be hoped some effort will be made to re-establish the county club. In the Plymouth district plenty of support would be accorded it.” The follow ing are some of the latest hundreds:— Mar. 19.— E.Windsor,Cornwall v.Esk (Hobart) 120 April 11. —Vet.-Capt.
