Cricket 1898

M ay 5, 1898. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 103 OXFORD UNIVERSITY SENIORS’ MATCH. Played on May 2, 3 and 4. Abandoned. Rain prevented play on the first day of this match, and on the second day the weather was not very propitious. As was hut natural, the batsmen did not show up very well, hut Montmorency did some surprisingly good howling in the course of half-a-dozen overs. Mr. Stratton’s side had much the best of matters as far as the game went, and at close of play were 88 runs on with five wickets still in hand. No play was possible on Wednes day owing to rain. In weather which was not likely to give encouragement to any nervous Freshman, this match began in what is known as a sensational manner. Cole, the old Harrovian, and Daniell, the old Cliftonian, who have both made a great school reputation, went first to the wickets, and each made a duck. To tho newcomers such a start was disappoin ting in tho extreme, but Prest, with no very great reputation at stake, soon settled down to play good cricket, andthanks to his innings of 61, the total was moderately good. The best bowling was done by Norman, who was not announced to take part in the match. The innings of Mr. Wilson’s side was more remarkable for the bowling of Clarke than for the batting, although H. S. Keigwin played a good innings. When Mr. Stogdon’s side went in a second time, 44 runs behind, the two batsmen who began the first innings in such an unsatisfactory manner showed that their collapse was a mistake. After their excellent partnership was over, Prest again played a good innings; but no one else, except Glenny, could do much with the bowlers, of whom Norman was again in form. At the close of play on the second evening, Mr. W il son’s side, who had gone in to make 295, were only 154 runs behind with nine wickets in hand. This was chiefly due to good cricket by Heslop and Keigwin and an abundance of extras. Yesterday (Wednesday), rain pre vented play until three o’clock. Keigwin increased his total to 48, and extras also increased in proportion. M r . S toodon ’ s S ide . T. G. O. Cole (Harrow), c Apthorp, b Norman ... 0 b Norman...............46 J. The first-class season began in miserable weather, and no play was possible until after three o’clock, when the Sussex team went into the field to shiver with cold, and to make the best use they could of a wet ball. M.C.C. began their innings with the two veterans, W . G. and A. N. Hornby. The former was in great form from the very first, and in the course of a brilliant innings made four hits to square-leg for four off an over of Bland’s. Another Gloucestershire amateur, C. O. H. Sewell, batted well for 42, and later in the innings Albert Trott showed that his visit to South Africa has not taken away his ability to make runs. When the innings closed, stumps were drawn for the day. M.C.C. & W. G. Grace, b Parris 65 A. N. Hornby, c Butt, b Tate ................. 4 Gunn, c Murdoch, b Tate ........................ 1 C. O. H.
