8G CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A p r il 22, 1897. MR . PR IE S T L E Y ’S TE AM IN TH E W E ST IND IE S . ( Continued from page 55.) THE SECOND ALL JAMAICA MATCH. (Thirteenth of the Tour.) Played at Kingston on March 16 and 17. Mr. Priestley’ s team won by 10 wickets. The fact that Mr. Priestley’s team won the first match by an innings somewhat lessened the interest which was taken in the second, for the superiority of the visitors was evident. The innings of the Englishmen was remarkable only for the batting of Mr. Stoddart, who for the fifth time during the tour was able to score a hundred off West Indian bowling. Three other members of the team made double figures; the rest were accountable for rdne between them, and their united efforts only amounted to half the runs scored by extras. The majority of the Jamaica batsmen did equally badly, but their want of success was to some extent atoned fur by the good cricket shown by E. K. Herbert (26 and 26) and E. D. Eichmond (4 and 60). THE BLACK RIVER MATCH. (Fourteenth of the Tour.) Played at Black River on March 19 and 20. Sir. Priestley’s teamwon by 7 wickets. It was not expected that this match would produce any great excitement, for it seemed very long odds that the English men would score an easy victory. But when they went in against a total of 122 made by the Black Eiver Twelve, they lost seven wickets for 40. Thanks, however, to Leigh, the total was not very far behind that of their opponents, who, with the exception of W. Gr. Farquharson, collapsed in the second innings, leaving Mr. Priestley’s team a fairly easy task. B lack R iver . First innings. Second innings W .H . The North men were very weak, and have a great deal to learn. They have no bowler who stands out prominently, and their batting is at present moderate. Consequently Mr. Priestley’s team had a walk over. M r . P riestley ’ s T eam . M. J. W oods, b Murray ......................19 J. Leigh, c Plant, b Murray ......................11 A. E. Mr. Priestley’s team won by an innings and 15 runs. Once again — the sixth time — Mr. Stoddart made a hundred, and again most of the other batsmen failed to distinguish themselves. On the side of Jamaica, E. K. Herbert, who did well in the second match, made 39 and 5, and B. H. Drury played very good cricket for 65; in the second innings he was out
