Walker until 1885, and A. J. W ebbe from 1885 up to date. Champion C o u n ty O n e year only, 1878. II.—THE BATSMEN. In batting Middlesex have always been strong, and at the present time the county is stronger in that department than ever before. A. E. Stoddart, T. C. O’Brien, and A. J. Webbe are probably the three best batsmen who have played for the club during the period under notice, the first-named being the best the county ever possessed. Against Nottinghamshire, at Lord’s, in 1893, he scored two separate centuries, whilst in the very next county match on the same ground, he, in conjunction with T. C. O’Brien, scored 228 for the first wicket when Middlesex followed on against Surrey, 179 runs in arrears. Mr. Norman Gale was probably thinking of this match, when he wrote— When Stoddart makes her hum Up at Lord’8! And the Surrey skipper’s glum Up at Lord’s, Oh ! all my odds are even, And (I hope to be forgiven) ’ Tis a truly Cricket Heaven Up at Lord’s. Mr. O’Brien’ s best performance was against Yorkshire, at Lord’s, in 1889, when, after a great deal of heavy scoring, Middlesex were set 280 runs to get to win, with only three hours and thirty-five minutes left for play. At half-past five, the score was only 129, and there were four of the best men out. It was at this point that Mr. O’Brien commenced his innings. Until now, nobody had dreamt of a win being possible for Middlesex, whilst Yorkshire had a chance of getting their opponents out in time to win the match. But alas! for the hopes of Yorkshire. O’Brien lashed the ball all over the ground ; at one time, three men were actually placed in the long field to fast bowling. When G. F. Vernon partnered Mr. O’ Brien, the hitting became terrific, the last 83 runs being scored in 35 minutes. Mr. O’Brien carried out his bat for 100 (made in eighty minutes), and Middlesex won by four wickets, ten minutes before time. Mr. A. J. Webbe is the only player who took part in Middlesex matches both in 1878 and 1897. He is the connecting link between two generations of cricketers. The season of 1897 was his twenty-third of county cricket, and his thirteenth of captaincy. His most successful season was that of 1887, when he twice scored centuries—192 and 243, on each occasion going in first and carrying out his bat. Other batsmen who have rendered good service to Middlesex cricket are J. Douglas, F. G. J. Ford, W. H. Hadow, H. B. Hayman, C. F. H. Leslie, R. S. Lucas, the brothers Lyttelton. J. T. Rawlin, S. W. Scott, the brothers Studd, Dr. G. Thornton, G. F. Yernon, I. D. Walker, and P. F. Warner. But to statistics : — CENTURIES B Y MIDDLE8EXJBATSMEN. J. D ouglas . 110, v.
