Cricket 1897

454 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. Nov. 25, 1897. the game during his school days his progress was so slow that no one who saw him play at that time would have marked him out as being a cricketer of even moderate promise. It was not until the season ot 1894-5 that he began to play cricket seriously, when he joined the Central Cumberland C.C., but it was not long before he made his presence felt in the team, as maybe readily imagined when it is said that he was first in the bowling averages with 11 runs per wicket and third in batting with 22. In the following season he.was third in bowling with 18 and also third in batting with 35. CR ICKET IN C A L IFO RN IA . PLACER CO. v. SAN FRANCISCO W ANDERERS. —Played at Loomis on October 17. D ear Sir,—In your issue of Oct. 28, I notice the follow ing:—“ At a Smoker given by the Belmont C.C. to the English ■visitors, Mr. Warner, the English captain (according to the Public Ledger, Phila delphia), said that, excepting Mr. Richardson, the great English bowler, King was the greatest bowler in the world.” What I actually did say was as follows: “ It has been said by the admirers of Mr. King, that on his day he is, with the exception of the famous Tom Richardson, the greatest bowler in the world; I see no reason to cavil at the verdict.” Mr. King, on his day, is certainly one of the best bowlers I have played against. In another part of the same issue, quoting from the Philadelphia Ledger you say that “ Mr. Warner was at bat four hours.” As a matter of fact I was at the wickets exactly three hours; fifty six runs in three hours, with twenty two men in the field, is not such a very slow rate of scoring after all. American papers are notorious for their exaggera tions, so I hope you will find room to insert this in your next number. Yours truly, P. F. WARNER. N E X T ISSUE, THURSDAY , DECEMBER 30.
