Cricket 1897
448 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. O ct. 28, 1897. THE FIRST GENTLEMEN OP PHILA DELPHIA MATCH. (Fourth of the Tour.) Played on the Belmont Ground on September 24, 25, and 27. Gentlemen of Philadelphia won hy 4 wickets. Again the weather was unpromising. In their first innings the Americans played good cricket, and their score of 242 was big enough to give them reasonable hopes of winning the match. Towards the end of the day the light began to get very bad, and the last of the home team complained that he could not see the ball. Nevertheless, the visitors went out to bat and in the dim light lost two wickets, Clark and King naturally and wisely making the most of their pace. An appeal was made to the umpire as to whether the light was strong enough for play, but he suggested another over, and another over there was. In this the Englishmen lost two more wickets to King, who bowled at a great pace. After this it was found that the light was not good enough for play, and the game was adjourned. Four wickets had fallen for 0 ! The Englishmen did not recover from their shockingly bad start, and were all out for 63 ; King took nine wickets for 25 runs. In the follow-on they did infinitely better. There were two long partnerships; Hemingway and Warner put on 96 for the second wicket, and Head and Leveson-Gower 128 for the fifth. Head played a splendid innings for 101, Hemingway hit brilliantly in the style which attracted so much atten tion while he was at Cambridge, and Warner and Leveson-Gower both played fine cricket. The Americans were left to make 194, and before the runs were obtained the excitement was considerable; indeed, it is not at all unlikely that if the fielding of the visitors had been up to its usual standard they might have won. In the absence of two or three of the best of the Philadelphia men, this match which was chiefly remarkable for the brilliant cricket played by Jessop, lost much of its interest. Mr. Warner won the toss, and his team made enough runs to give a fair prospect of victory, thanks to the good innings played by Chinnery, Jessop, Leveson-Gower and Marriott. The Philadelphians, in a poor light, had a few minutes batting before stumps were drawn, and although they were not as unfortunate as the Englishmen in the first match, when they went in at the close of the first day’s play, they lost two wickets for 18 runs. On the following morning they did not make much of a stand against the bowling of Jessop and Bull. The result was a follow-on. This time King played what was, perhaps, the best innings of his career, and Noble also played remarkably good cricket; but the two men were not well backed up. The Englishmen had a very easy task. When Jessop came in after three wickets had fallen 30 runs were still required, and in a quarter of an hour he had scored 26 of them, while his partner made the rest. Mr. Warner offered to play a third match to decide the rubber, but as there was no chance that the home team would be at its strongest it was decided not to play. M r . P. F.
