Cricket 1897
O c t. 28, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 447 MR . P. F. W A R N E R ’S TEAM IN THE UN ITED STATES. THE NEW YORK MATCH. (First of the tour.) Played at Staten Island on Sept. 13 and 14. Mr. Warner’s team won by 244 rone. Nobody expected that the New Yorkers would be victorious, and the home team can hardly have been disappointed at being severely beaten, for New York cricketers have to contend with even greater difficulties than the Philadel phians. Unfortunately the weather was anything but pleasant, and the wicket, owing to the effects of the heavy rains, was greatly in favour of the bowlers; at times it was almost alarmingly difficult. Under these circumstances the New York team in scoring 78 and 123 against such bowlers as F. G. Bull, G. L. Jessop and F. W. Stocks cannot be said to have done at all badly. After each side had played an innings it was seen that, bar accidents, the visitors would win very easily, for they were obviously much the stronger. The second innings settled the question, for the Americans had no possible chance of making the 368 runs required to win, although two men, J. F. Curran and M. R. Cobb, played excellent cricket. The great men in the visiting team did very little in the second innings, but the tail, especially R. A. Bennett and J. R. Head, who each made a fine score, more than compensated for the shortcomings of the better known batsmen. Stocks made 13 at the end of the innings, and was missed four times. First innings. J. F.
