Cricket 1897
O ct . 28, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 439 “ Were there any good men in the school team with you?” “ There were several good bats; but few of them distinguished themselves in after years at athletics. Among them were C. G. L. Page, brother of W. R. Page, Old Carthusian and International foot baller; T. E. Wells, the ’Varsity miler, and A. H. Higgins, the lightest stroke that Oxford ever had. O. G. Radcliffe was before and H. 0. Stewart after me. Magdalen was a great rowing school, and at about the time that I was there we had a man in the boat for five successive years.” “ What was your college ? ” “ I was at Hertford for four years, and was in the team all the time. Among my contemporaries were M. C. Kemp, H. Vassall, the great Rugby forward; Tristram, the International full back; C. J. 8. King and R. S. King, who both played football for England; Cornish, th e’Varsity centre at Association; A. N. Treadgold, M. H. Jephson, J. L. Booker, H. C. Formby, H. W. Guy and A. H. J. Cochrane. We had five men in the ’Varsity Eight, and were at the head of the river, which was not bad for a small college. But we had a splendid Don in C. N. Jackson. One of Mr. Godfrey’s choicest recollec tions is that he—fast bowler as he was —once had six men out, and by so doing managed to bag his man. “ This,” said Mr. Godfrey, “ was against Mr. C. I. Thornton, to whom, in his best days, a length ball was a half volley. The match was at High Wycombe, and the reason that I played was that two men were telegraphed for from Philberds, to assist the local club against the M.C.C. Lohmann was on our side. He was then in his prime and was received by a tre mendous crowd, and, as far as I remem ber, a brass band met him at the station. It happened that he and I were bowling and that I was taking all the wickets, until at last our captain came to me and said, 1Do you mind changing ends, Loh mann thinks that he can bowl better from your end’ ? I have never played at High Wycombe since then, though they constantly ask me to play in the big match. I had an amusing experience in another match in the country, when Key was playing. When he was at Clifton, Key was a leg-break bowler, and may be now for all I know—perhaps, as captain of the Surrey team, he does not care to go on without practice. In 1882, he and I were bowling at Hampton Wick and keeping wicket to each other—mine was the lighter task. P. B. Shadwell was batting, and a beauty from Key hit the top of the off-stump, knocking it back an inch or two, and going on into my hands. Shadwell, hearing the noise behind him, and quite satisfied that he was bowled, walked towards the pavilion. I then discovered that no bails were off. So I put the wicket down, appealed for stumping, the umpire gave him ‘ out,’ and the incident seemed closed. But in the meantime the bowler’s umpire had called ‘ over ’ before the wicket was put down, so that Shadwell resumed his innings.” Mr. Godfrey is not given to playing slow cricket when he is batting, but he remembers a match in which, going in first wicket down, he carried his bat for seven runs. “ It was for Granville against the M.C.C., a very hot team,” he said, “ and I could not get Martin away. The wicket was very difficult indeed, and we only made a few runs, and the M.C.C. not many more. In the following summer, at Hastings, I overheard W.G. say, that, on his own wicket, Martin was the most difficult bowler in England.” W. A. B e t t e s w o r t h . BRADFIELD COLLEGE.
