Daring the past three seasons the per formances of the Indian Prince in first- class cricket have aroused world-wide interest. In 1892 he scored so heavily in college matches at Cambridge that he gained a place in the University Eleven the following year. Although he was practically a failure in the ’Varsity match at Lord’s—he only scored 9 and 0—he scored 386 runs in fifteen innings, twice not out. The same year he played twice against the Australians, besides making his first appearance for the Gentlemen of England against the Players. In 1891 he became a member of the M.C.C. and played in four matches that year for the premier club. B it the red-letter mark in the Prince’s career was in 1895, when he commenced playing for Sussex. In his first match for the southern shire, against M.C.C. at Lord’s he scored 77 not out in his first innings and a splendid 150 in his second. At the end of the season he had for his county alone scored 1,766 runs. Fine, however, as were his performances in 1895, he did even better the foliowins: year, when he playei tea three-figure innings (two of them being in the Sassex v. Yorkshire match at Brighton and one for E igland v. Aus tralia at Mmihester) aud, in all first-class in itches, obtained the unprecedented number of 2,780 runs, thus eclipsing Mr. W. G. Grace’s record of 2,739 in 1871. For his county he scored 2,113 runs ! Although his perform inoes during the past season have perhaps not been quite so brilliant as those of the preca ling year, he is, nevertheless, one of the three best batsmen iu E lgland at the present time. The next cricket season in England, with out Ranjitsinhji, will be like “ Htmlet, the part of Ha ulet left out.” We all hope, however, th it the season of 1898 will once again sse the pjpular Indiin Prince in the rauks of Sussex. In the meantime le", m all wish him aa revoir, a pleasant jourmy, and miny big sc ires on Cornstalk wickets. BATTING AVERAGES IN A L L MATCHES. Year. Mtchs. Inns. Not out. Runs. Most.
