Cricket 1897

410 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. S e p t . 9, 1897. were choosing the best all-round man of the day. Perhaps Mr. Jackson has batted better in some other seasons than this year; but I doubt if he has ever bowled quite as well. Both Hirst and Wain wiight have had better bowling years; but both have shown batting form this season far in advance of anything credited to them before. Indeed, Hirst’s consis tent form has been of late almost phe nomenal for a bowler. He has only scored one century, and that quite early in the season; but he has also made scores of 89, 88; 88, 68, 65, 63*, 61*, 55, 54, 52, and no fewer than fourteen others of between 20 and 50. Wainwright’s big scores have often reached three figures; he has no fewer than five centuries to his credit, besides innings of 75, 71, 63, 62, 60 and 50. Each has scored over 1,000 runs and taken over 100 wickets, a feat equalled only by Hayward and G. L. Jessop this season, and by W. G. Grace, G. Giffen, G. E. Palmer, Flowers, C. T. Studd, Peel, Davidson and Hirst himself in previous seasons. Mr. Jackson has also scored a four-figure total, and had he done a little more bowling in the early part of the season, would probably have emulated the double feat of his pro fessional comrades. Peel showed good form both with bat and ball, but, owing to an illness and the contretemps at Shef field, played little after the first half of the season. Haigh was somewhat erratic. At times he bowled with deadly effect, as against Kent at Halifax, Surrey at Leeds, and Derby at Bradford; at other times he was freely punished without getting a wicket. Once or twice he bitted pluckily at the end of an innings. F. W. Milligan shows sure and steady improvement; his batting is far better than it was only a year or two back, and he is a deadly bowler on his day, which does not, however, come often. Brown had a very successful season, placing to his credit the highest score ever made by a professional batsman in a first-class match (311), besides scoring two other centuries, some eight or ten innings of over 50, and nearly always getting doubles. Earlier in the season Tuunicliffe did well, and his 147 v. Sussex at Sheffield is the highest score of his career; but since that he has played but two innings of 50, and his last eight innings to date have yielded but 39 runs. Denton was perhaps the most consistent batsman on the side; he was the only man who played in every match, and in very few of them was he a failure, al though in May he had six successive innings for 24 runs, the last three all ducks. Moorhouse was scarcely at his best; he did fairly well in May and July, but in June and August was very un successful. He has lost none of his pluck, however, and is still a good man when his side is in a tight place. Mounsey had few chances, and did practically nothing with these few. Early in the season Lord Hawke scored innings of 75, 54 and 91* ; but he has been troubled since then with attacks of malarial fever, and h*s not reached 40 in any innings siuce the end of June. His average is not a bad one, though. Ernest Smith did practically nothing; C. E. M. Wilson only played in two matches (scoring 91* in one); and F. Mitchell, though he played well for Cambridge and scored 133 and 58 for the M.C.C. against the Phila delphians, only had a place given him in one. I fancy that in the near future we shall see more of Mitchell in southern cricket. It is scarcely necessary to say that Hunter’s wicket-keeping was as fine as ever. When he could not play, Bairstow was a good understudy. J.N.P. UPPER TOOTING v. SURBITON.—Played Upper Tooting on September 4. S u r b ito n . W . B. Windeler, b Lucas .................. 9 H .B.
