Cricket 1897

S ept . 2, 1897. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 401 HAMPSH IRE v. SOMERSETSHIRE. Played at Taunton on August 30, 31, aad September 1. Abandoned. There was no necessity for the head groundman at Taunton to water his wickets, for the weather in the West of England had for some time been of the sort which is admired by anglers more than by cricketers or givers of garden parties. But on the morning of the first day of the match it was possible to begin play at the usual time, although it was odds that the g tme would be interrupted before the evening. The Hampshire captain won the toss, and chose first in nings, the wicket playing pretty easily, long enough to enable Hampshire to make a sufficiently good start. Captain Wynyard and Barton, who went in first, were not content to play tame cricket, and in a little more than half-an-hour they had put on 50, while by the time that Barton was at last bowled by Robson, the score had advanced to 73, of which Barton’s share was 41, an excellent innings. Webb stayed long enough to get comfortably set, and Mr. Lee seemed likely to repeat his success against Leicestershire; but they were both dismissed for between 20 and 30. Captain Wynyard played very sound cricket for his 41. The tail did not do much, and the total hardly came up 13 expectations. But when Somerset went in it began to look as if the Hampshire men had made more than enough, for against the bowling of Baldwin and Heseltine the home team fared badly, losing two good wickets for 32 before stumps were drawn. On Tuesday and Wednesday not a ball was bowled. H a m p s h ir e . Capt. E. G. Wynyard, C. Robson, c and b c Palairet, b Tyler.. 42 Hedley Barton, b Robson ... 41 Webb, lbw, b Woods 26 E. C. It was not much encouragement to the Derbyshire men to find that their captain had lost the toss, for the wicket looked likely to play easily, for a time at any rate, while the weather was to unpromising, that a team which was doomed to take second innings had a very fair chance of being well beaten. The saddest part of it all was that this was the last chance the county had of placing a solitary victory to their credit. The beginning of the Warwickshire innings was not at all disheartening to Derbyshire, but when Lilley and Mr. Bainbridge were togther for the third wicket, the score began to creep up with a regularity which promised a fairly big total, and when Mr. Bainbridge left for 36, just failing to make his 1000 runs by two, W . G. Quaife took his place, and kept in for the rest of the day. Lilley made 82, his highest score of the season, in his best style, and at the end of the day, Mr. Glover was in with Quaife, having scored 26. In the course of the day’s cricket, Warwickshire had put on 239 runs for the loss of six wickets, so that in the present state of the weather, the best that Derbyshire could hope for was a drawn f ame. N o play was possible on Tuesday or Wednes- ay. W a r w ic k s h ir e H. W . Bainbridge, c and b Warren.......... Hb Quaife (W .), c and b Cross.......................... 7 J. F.
