Cricket 1897

S ept . 2, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 393 well as batsmen. Frank Sugg, Albert Ward, Baker, Tyldesley, Brown, Tunnicliffe, Den ton, Moorhouse, Gunn, Shrewsbury, Bagshaw, Chatterton, Walter Sugg, Walter Quaife, W. G. Quaife, Diver, Knight, Tomlin, Wrathall, Barton, Webb, Bean, Marlow, Abel, Brockwell, Baldwin and Carpenter— that is near enough to being a complete list. Some of these men can bowl a bit, of course ; but they cannot be said to be played as bowlers. Of course there are plenty of men who would be worth their places as batsmen apart from their bowling or wicket-keeping, Hirst, Wainwright, Hayward, Davidson, Storer, Lilley and others ; but the fact remains that they are not played for their batting alone. By the way, would not a good match for one of the seaside festivals be (if the sides could be got together) Eleven County Captains v. Eleven Wicket-keepers? On one side would be W.G., K. J. Key, W. L. Murdoch, Capt. Wynyard, H. W. Bainbridge, F. Mar chant, S. H. Evershed, S. M. J. Woods, A. C. MacLaren, J. A. Dixon and Lord Hawke; on the other Gregor MacGregor, H. Philipson, Storer, Lilley, Board, Charles Smith, Pike, David Hunter, Wood, A. E. Newton and C. Robson. The bowling would not be very strong on either side, it is true; but the matchmight reveal unexpected ability in that direction, for (bar Storer and Lilleyj the stumpers don’t often get a chance of showing how they can trundle, and we all know that many captains are too modest to put themselves on. Next week, with the county season over and only the Hastings Festival outstanding, I hope to give the first instalment of my comments on the individual players of the season, to be followed in due course by the complete statistics. B y “ R.T.” This popular wandering club wound up its season on Saturday last at the County Ground, Brighton, against the Gentlemen of Sussex, having since the beginning of May last gone through the long programme of 57 fixtures, arranged with leading suburban clubs ; the Colleges at Oxford, Cheltenham, and Clifton; Sherborne, Uppingham, Repton, West minster and Dunstable Schools; the Military clubs at Aldershot, Sandhurst, Colchester, Woolwich, and Shoeburyness; also by special invitation to the charming county seat of Mr. J. H. Berens, at Wolverstone Park ; Sir H. Tichborne at Alresford ; Mr. W. H. Laverton at Leigh ton; and Baron de Worms at Milton Park, and tours into Guernsey, Jersey, the Eastern Counties, the West of Eng land, and Sussex. Taken as a whole, the club has had a very prosperous season, for the wins are far in excess of the losses, and really that is all that ought to be looked for, as both sides cannot win, although when begin ning they hope and wish they may do so. The Tours were successful, and many thanks are due to Messrs. W. J. Seton, Major C. E. Orman, Capt. P. C. W. Trevor, J. E. Raven, W. C. Martyn and L. E. G. Abney, forgetting together strong teams, a matter not easy of accomplish ment at all times. The success of the old club will be most cheery news—when he gets his Cricket —to His Excellency Sir Augustus Hemming, K.C.M.G., now resident at British Guiana as Governor- General of that colony for Great Britain, for as late hon. sec. he advanced and built up the “ Incogniti” to the prominent position it now holds, and, which it is most gratifying to note, is still being well looked after and sustained. The batsmen who have particularly shone as rungetters during the past season and “ topped the century,” are:—H. A. Francis (169), P. P. Hadow (164, not out), H. P. Justice (130), B. J. T. Bosanquet (130), A. J. Rice (128), F. G. J. Ford (113), W. C. Bristowe (103), L. C. R. Thring (101), and H. F. Fox (101); whilst those that have neared the century are: A. G. S. Glover (97), Lieut. Watson (96), and J. A. Berners (92); whilst those that have gained the half-century and upwards are : H. R. Ellison, T. C. Bett, Major C. E. Orman, Capt. P. C. W. Trevor, H. J. Davenport, J. A. Gibb, W. F. Felton, A. G. Archer, J. A. Berners, L. C. R. Thring, L. J. Moon, W. J. Seton, C. E. Higginbotham, A. A. Tor rens, H. H. Harrington, C. H. Ransome, W. J. Synnott, G. E. Winter, M. P. Le- warne, B. J. T. Bosanquet, W. R. Collins, Capt. Fleming, P. B. Yanderbyl, A. P. Snell, T. A. Higson, G. P. Wilson, and Rev. F. W. Poland. The bowlers who have trundled most sensationally and effectively, are: W. B. Delacombe, P. B. Yanderbyl, and L. H. Haynes—these three “ bringing off ” the hat trick. Whilst Dr. Cobbold, T. A. Higson, H. P. Justice, H. A. Francis, A. G. S. Glover, B. J. T. Bosanquet, and L. E. G. Abney “ Pegge<l away,” kept down the runs, and bowled most successfully in the various matches in which they took part. And thus, in bidding farewell to the season of 1897, the “ Incogs ” wish, through the medium of Cricket, to return their warmest thanks for the genial wel comes they received on their visits and tours, and hope again to have the pleasure in 1898 of meeting all old friends and many new ones.
