Cricket 1897
A u g . 26, 1897. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 385 SUSSEX v. KENT. Played at Brighton on August 23, 24 and 25. Drawn. On a fairly easy wicket Sussex made an excellent beginning, Mr. Fry and Mr. Brann putting on 125 for the first wicket. Mr. Brann was the first to go after batting for an hour and three quarters for a perfectly correct innings of 52, but his late partner continued to bat so well in conjunction with K. S. Ranjitsinhji that a lively time for the Kent bowlers was prophesied. But Ranjitsinhji, who has not yet quite recovered his old control over the ball, was out for 33 when he was apparently set for at least a hundred, and not long afterwards, Mr. Fry’s splendid innings came to a close for 122. After this Mr. Newham played very sound cricket for 41 and Parris made 22, but the tail collapsed, and the innings came to an end for less than had seemed probable, although the total was a good one. In the dreaded ten minutes batting before stumps were drawn, Kent lost Alec Hearne. On Tuesday, however, after a moderate start, Mr. Stewart proved to be in wonderfully good form, and thanks to his fine batting, and pretty cricket by Mr. Rashleigh, the score was taken to 261 for 7 before play ended for the day. A t one time it seemed likely that the appearance of the game would be even better for Kent, for over 200 was up for the loss of four wickets. The bowlers were somewhat handicapped by a wet ball in the morning, and the wicket was not very difficult at any time. The Kent innings closed on Wednesday for 310, Mr. Weigall playing very well indeed. While Sussex was batting in the second innings rain interrupted play, but there was time to get the whole team out.
