Cricket 1897
A ug . 12, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 351 Sons, a detailed review must necessarily be deferred. But for present purposes, it will be perhaps sufficient to place on record that Ranji’s book, which has been “ Dedicated b y her gracious permission to Her M tjesty, the Queen Empress,” will more than challenge comparison with the very best previous publications on the grand old game. I t is hoped that Peel will, after all, be able to assist Yorkshire again before the end of the season. He was, it will be remembered, yery severely hurt b y a fast ball at Bradford in the m itch against Lancashire, and it was feared that he would be hors de combat for the rest of the season. But at the end of last week he was able to go to Scarb trough, where he is gradually regaining his strength. A v e r y useful list of cricket records has been compiled by Mr. James Hutchin son ( “ Slip,” of the Otago Witness). The English and Australian records are, of course, made up from “ Wisden,” etc., but, in addition, everything of importance that has occurred in New Zealand in the way of records is noted. Like all other compilers, Mr. Hutchinson omits the name of Mr. A. B. Tancred (132 and 103 not out, in South Africa, 1896) from the list of those who have scored a hundred in both innings of a match. Did not Major Piercy also accomplish the feat a few years ago in India ? T he follow ing are some of the latest hundreds Aug. 9 A bel , S urrey y .
