Cricket 1897
A ug . 5, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 331 HAMPSHIRE v. LANCASHIRE. Played at Old Trafford on July 29 and 30. Lancashire won by 10 wickets. While all the other matches at the end of the week were played on good and hard wickets, the pitch at Old Trafford had been so greatly affected hy rain that the bowlers for once had matters to their liking. Possibly Hampshire could have done better if they had put their opponents in, for the wicket was at its worst while they were batting, and Briggs, as was to be expected under such circumstances, carried every thing before him. Captain Wynyard, despite the difficulties in his way, played a good innings, but all the rest of the team failed completely. When Lan cashire went in they did very little better than the Southerners until Briggs, playing a bold game, knocked up 31. Thanks chiefly to him Lancashire had a lead of 61, and as Hampshire, with the excep tion of Webb, did not distinguish themselves in the second innings, Lancashire won with ease. H a m p sh ir e .
