Cricket 1897

A ug . 5, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 329 run a minute may fairly lay claim to being considered an unusually fast scorer; but the Cantab’ s runs were made at the rate of 2J per minute ! Looking over my list of the cen turies of 1897 I find that very few indeed were made at the rate of even a run per minute. Among them are Mr. N. F. Druce’s 109, “ Ranji’s ” 260 (his 170 on Saturdaylast took just about three hours), Mr. F. G. J. Ford’s ]50 and 112 (the latter in 73 minutes), Mr. C. J. Bumup’s 108 and Mr. S. H. Evershed’s 112. Mr. Jessop’ s century scores have beeU : 140, C.imb. Univ. v. Philadelphians, in 95 minutes. 101, Gloucestershire v. PhiladelpLians, in 90 minutes. 1*26, Gloucestershire v. Warwickshire, in 95 minutes. 101, Gloucestershire v. Yorkshire, in 40 minutes. I doubt if any four three-figure innings by any one batsman, living or dead, not in one season only, but throughout his whole career, can be found to equal these for fast scoring. But “ it’s not cricket,” say some! The list of long partnerships for the month just ended is an exceptionally long one. Mr. Ueorgo Brann’s name occurs in it no fewer than six times ; and I think I may fairly con gratulate myself on the way in which he has borne out my judgment in suggesting him as first man in with Marlow. In this their last match, the Philadelphians gave an exhibition of which any county might have been proud. It was not to be expected for a moment that theywould beat the powerful elevenopposed to them, but they ran them close in the firstinnings, and in the second, having to bat fourth, which is alwaysji trying thing when the wicket is good, made an excellent attempt to save the game, only failing to make a draw by an hour. In the first innings Surrey hardly played up to their reputation, and if it had not been for their latest recruits, Mr. Chinnery and Mr. Druce, there would perhaps have been food for reflection. In the second innings Hayward was seen at his best, butitwas not until the tail came in when the bowlers were pretty tired, that the score showed promise of being large; but Mr. Key played one of his brilliant innings, and Lees and Wood also made runs, so that the total was not far oif 400. The Philadelphians batted uniformly well, but there were none of the great stands which wear out the bowling, and do so much towards the success of a side. Mr. Thayer was the only man who made over 60in either innings—his 59 was a very fine effort—but in the second innings Mr. Cregar, Mr. Bohlen and Mr. Ralston all made between 40 and 50, and batted very well indeed. Surrey were playiDg without Richardson, and the Philadelphians without their captain. S u r r e y . First innings. Second innings.
