J uly 29, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 321 YORKSHIRE v. SOMERSETSHIRE. Played at Leeds on July 26, 27 aud 28. Yorkshire won hy an innings and 22 runs. On a slow, but by no means difficult wicket, the York 8 hiremen made hay of the weak Somersetshire b >wling. and knocked up a score quite big enough to feel confident of victory, as the wicket showed signs of becoming more difficult. The hero ofjthe day was i.rown, whose score of 107 was made in a liitle over two hours, and included two five’s and 11 fours, and ••nly seven singles. Mr. Jackson made 44 in 50 minutes, Hirst 52 in about the same time, and Mr. »lilligan 51 in 35 minutes. During his partnership with Hirst, the bowling was kuocked about all over the field, and the Somersetshire team became almost demoralised. In the 70 minutes batting which Somerset had before stumps were drawn, they lost ihree wickets for 88 , of which 61 were obtained by .Vlr. Woods by some very resolute and well judged hitting. He carried his score to 111 on Tuesday, his iunings having laste 1for less than two hours The ieat of the team did nothing against the tine bowling •f Wainwiight. In the follow on nearly everybody nude runs, but the highest score was 36 by R. C. N. l'alairet, and the total was not large enough to save ihe ianings defeat. Y o r k s h ir e . F. S.
