Cricket 1897
310 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J uly 29, 1897. In the second innings Ranjitsinhji played splendid cricket, and probably, if I bowled to him again he would hit me all over the place. When he once gets going, you don’t know in the least how to bowl to him. One ball may be pitched up and hit for four between cover point and extra cover, and the next, pitching in exactly the same place, may go for four between square leg and sharp leg. In fact, you don’t know what to do next, for every thing comes alike to him.” “ Do you suppose that anybody might learn how to do the in-curve ? 19 “ I don’t see, in the least, why not. You hold the ball between your forefingers and the thumb and draw the hand back as you bowl. If you keep your thumb on the ball to the very last you can give an extra spin, but I fancy that the position of the body has a good deal to do with it. Still, it is difficult to explain how you do a thing at cricket; you may describe every action, and yet not mako the thing clear. I discovered the in-curve by accident when I was about eighteen, at a time when I was trying to bowl faster than before. I bowled a ball which happened to take a wicket, and so I tried to bowl the same ball again. The wicket-keeper noticed that it curled in the air before I did. So I practised, and after a time found that it did not interfere with the accuracy of the pitch.** “ Have you enjoyed the tour ?v “ We have all enjoyed it greatly. The hospitality of the English could not be exceeled. We came over here to learn the game, and by playing against the best teams we have had many useful lessons. When we have been successful we have been very pleased. In the States we see the same bats men over and over again, and everybody knows the style and failings of everybody else. Here all the batsmen and bowlers are entirely new to us; moreover so many of them are better than us, that we cannot help learning from them. We should never learn the game unless we played against men who were better than ourselves. I think most of us have learned some strokes from watching English batsmen, especially on the leg side. Over here if a batsman gets a ball at all pitched up on the leg stump he glances it round by what seems a perfectly safe stroke; some batsmen hook it round from the off stump just as successfully .’1 “ What have you learned as regards bowling? ” “ We find that we want a slow left-hand bowler—Harry Brown would have helped us out a lot—and we want a slow bowler of about the pace of Bull. I think that your bowlers keep more to the off than we do. For myself I try to arrange my field in some thing like the same way as some of your fast bowlers, eKcept that I never have a man out unless such hitters as Jessop and F. G. J. Ford are in. Our fielding has disappointed us, but many of the team have strained their legs, owing, I suppose, to continually playing on very hard ground.” W . A. B e tte s w o r th .
