Cricket 1897

J u ly 22 , 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 297 No more than this is needed to show the immense strides he has made of late. Wain wright is one of the pluckiest of cricketers, too. Never is he more likely to make runs than when they are badly wanted, for he does not know what funk means, and his nerves seem made of highly-tempered steel. His 103 at Dewsbury was only one of many great innings that he has played for Yorkshire at critical times. Now that he has once run into form, Mr. (J. S. Patterson is demonstrating to the full what a really great batsman he is. Scores of 162, 59*, and 53 make a week’s work of which anyone might be proud. But his team is not a well-balanced one. There are perhaps half-a-dozen really good players in it ; the rest can scarcely be called first-class. Besides Wainwright, who has already placed four figures to his credit, several other batsmen who have never before had that distinction appear likely to gain it in the very near future. Messrs. J. A. Dixon, F. G. J. Ford and George Brann, with Tyldesley, should all accomplish it during the next fortnight or so; and Messrs. N. F. Druce and P. Perrin, with Barton and Baldwin, are other likely candidates. Is young Gunn’s bowling at Dewsbury to be taken seriously ? I asked the same thing about Dench’s, after his first successful week; and, as events have turned out, Dench can scarcely be looked upon as a serious accession to Notts’s bowling strength. Anyway, how ever, the nephew of our old friend William would appear to have a lot of cricket in him; and Notts is more fortunate in her colts to-day than for years past, J.N.P. KENSINGTON v.
