Cricket 1897

J u ly 15, 1897. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 289 WARWICKSHIRE v. LEICESTERSHIRE Played at Leicester on July 12, 13, and 14. Warwickshire won hy an innings and 57 runs. In this match Leicestershire were altogether out played, and after allowing their opponents to make 472, which included two splendid innings of a hundred by Diver and Mr. Glover, they lost all chance of making a fight by only putting on 122 in the first innings. In the second, thanks to Mr. Wood, Knight, Tomlin, King and Geeson they did remarkably well, but the effort came too late. W arw ic k sh ir e . Quaife (W .), lbw, b Woodcock . ...........83 H. W . Played at Nottingham on July 12, 13, and 14. Drawn. Like Yorkshire in their match with Sussex, Notts were without some of their best players, but unlike Yorkshire they did not rise to the dignity of the occasion, although als) like Yorkshire they lost the toss. Alfred Shaw made a belated reappearance in the team for which he did such great things in years gone by, and even now, old as he is for a bowler, he can still keep up his end. and keep down the runs to some extent, when the younger generation are at a loss to know what to do to prevent being hit for four. Happily for the visitors, Mr. W ood, an old Notts county man, Mr. Patterson, and Mr. Bohlen were all in good form. Mr. Wood, who has throughout the tour played well, made the first hundred for his side by exceedingly good cricket. Mr. Patterson, deter mined to risk no chances, played with the utmost steadiness, and was rewarded by making 162. He deserves his success, for he has had a very trying time during the tour. Mr. Bohlen played very freely for 61, and as others of the team did well, the total was the Urge one of 421. Against this Notts did fairly well, thinks to giod innings by Dench, who always seems to make runs, Daft, Mason, and Mr. Jones, but could not save the follow-on, and before stumps were drawn ou Tuesday they had lost two wickets for 25, so that their position was about as bad as it could be. But in the art of playing for a draw Notts are very proficient, and they easily suc- ce ded in keeping up their wickets all Wednesday. P h ila d e lph ia n s . C.
