Played at Portsmouth on July 12, 13, and 14. Hampshire won hy three wickets. In this match last year Mr. Lionel Palairet made nearly 300 runs, but this year he is abroad, and in his absence the Somersetshire team did only moderately well after winning the toss, although the first five men, Mr. Woods. Mr. R. C. N. Palairet, Nichols, Robson, and Mr. Stanley, raised hopes of a very big score. After they were out, Porch was the only mau who could make runs. Just at present, Hampshire, when Mr. Lacey is absent, have to rely almost entirely on Captain Wynyard and Barton, and luckily for their side both these fine ericketers came off. Captain Wynyard making 80 and Parton 81. The rest of the team made 49 between them. In their second innings Somerset did very little, and Hampshire were left to make 155, towards which they had placed 44 for the loss of two wickets when play ended on Tuesday. Barton was not out 21, and Captain Wynyard had not yet been in, so that there were hopes of a victory. Captain Wynyard played well for 32, and as he was aided by Soar, Mr. Hill, and Mr.[Lee, the’ match was won, although when the not outs, Mr. Hill and Mr. Lee, came together there was a prospect of losing.
