Cricket 1897
J u l y 15, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 281 phian cricket contingent are writing their names pretty legibly in the annals of 1897. Mr. J. A. Lester’s wonderfully consistent scoring and really fine play and Mr. J. B. King’s all-round excellence are indisputable facts. Mr. Lester’s scores to date are:— 72*, 24, 24, 20, 4, 92, 34*, 15, 31, 1, 28, 12, 60, 6, 35 and 67, or 525 in 14 com pleted innings; and, be it remembered, Mr. Lester a year ago had never played in a first- cla^smatch. Mr. King has donethe bulk of the bowling thus far, having taken nearly as many wickets as all the other bowlers together, among his records being 13 for 115 v. Sussex and 12 for 167 v. Warwickshire; in addition he has scored double figures in about two-thirds of the innings he has played, among his scjres being 58, 49 and 46*. I expressed the opinion before the tour began that, if by any chance Mr. G-. S. Patterson failed, his team would not meet with a very large measure of success ; and I think events have to some extent justified my prediction, though there may be some difference of opinion as to the extent of the influence of the captain’s failure. I should not be surprised to find the record materially improved in the last few matches, however, though Mr. Ralston’s accident is a sad blow ; and there is still time for the American captain to show his true form.
